Program Details
Our sea turtle conservation project is located on a beautiful pristine beach on the Osa peninsula. At night we relocate turtle nests from the beach into the safety of a hatchery, so that poachers don't get to the eggs first. The baby turtles will then eventually hatch and that's where we need your help.
You'll be the guardian to the baby turtles, and their safety relies on you, especially during the day. Your task is simple but essential; when the sun is up, every two hours, you'll go into the hatchery to check if any baby turtles have hatched. If so, you'll place them in bucket with water and sand and bring them to a cooler place until it is safe for them to be released. That is when the sun isn't so harsh anymore, aka during sunset.
That's it! We have an accommodation for you right by the beach, and of course right by the hatchery. So you can live out your tropical beach dreams surrounded by pristine nature and baby turtles. Keep in mind that the accommodation is rustic as there is no electricity (you'll be welcome to charge your electronics in nearby places and use the wifi there).
Activities & Shift
Six days a week you'll check on the baby turtles in the hatchery every 2 hours, typically from 7AM to 5:30PM.
There are other activities that you could join, especially if you want to learn more about sea turtles, but none are mandatory.
On your free day we will have other people check on the hatchery so you can use the time to check out places around you. We are close to Corcovado National Park and Caño Island Marine Reserve, we can help you organize a tour to join there or elsewhere for example. Or you can go on a hike to a nearby beach, river, estuary or waterfall.
