Program Details
The Island of Desires is a small private island in Ilha Grande Bay, in Angra dos Reis. Our challenge is to make the island sustainable, enabling it as a lodging project where people enjoy extraordinary nature and live a transformative experience.
Living on an island is learning with its limits. Our energy comes from the sun, our water comes from rain, and everything arrives by boat. Every decision, from the shower to the use of an electrical appliance, carries weight, and this changes the way we see consumption and time.
Here you wake up surrounded by sea and forest, you see the sun rise and set every day, and you share breakfast with the birds. We are a small lodging, with only three houses, and that is why your work truly matters and is part of the project. You will see up close how an island hospitality business operates, from boat logistics to sustainability management.
What we offer: accommodation on the island (guest room when there are no guests, or a shared room during stays), breakfast, lunch and dinner with the team, 2 days off per week. 25 hours per week.
In your free time you can swim, kayak, stand-up paddle, snorkel and see all this beauty. On days off, you can visit Ilha Grande, Angra dos Reis and Paraty.
Activities & Shift
Activities: sanding by hand and with a machine, painting, varnishing, stapling, moving furniture, decorating

Rules
Safety first
• Do not walk on the decks while looking at your phone.
• Do not dive from the pier or from the decks into the pool: it is shallow.
• Wear footwear and watch out for ground level differences.
• Use the PPE provided for any work with tools, paints or chemicals.
Water and energy
• Water comes from rain and is scarce: short showers, taps tightly closed, and the bucket under the shower until the water heats up.
• The energy is solar: no hair dryer, straightener, iron, electric kettle or other high-consumption devices.
Island and sea
• Toilet paper and any object never go in the toilet: the septic system.
• Do not throw into the sea anything that fish won’t eat.
• The island’s objects came from various parts of the world and are part of its history. Nothing can be taken from here.
Guest interaction
• During stays, discretion and respect for guests’ privacy.
• Do not photograph or publish images of guests.
• Your room may change during the stay, depending on occupancy.
Teamwork
• Here we live as a small community. Like everyone on the team, you will help washing dishes from time to time, carrying grocery bags that arrive by boat and helping to clean the island. These tasks are part of living together and do not count toward the 25 weekly hours.
• Tools go back to their place at the end of each day.
Bring: repellent and, if you’re allergic, an anti-allergic ointment.
