Program Details
Join Akuratatha in Sri Lanka and make a meaningful difference by teaching English to Buddhist monks. Volunteers help monks improve their English speaking, reading, writing, and communication skills through friendly, interactive lessons and educational activities.
Our program offers a unique opportunity to experience Sri Lankan culture, learn about Buddhist traditions, and build connections with the local community. You may also have opportunities to support preschool children and other community activities.
Akuratatha is a small, family-based organization dedicated to supporting local children, women, and monks through education and community development. We welcome volunteers who are patient, respectful, enthusiastic, and willing to share their knowledge.
No professional teaching experience is required, but a good level of English and a positive attitude are appreciated. Come share your skills, discover a different culture, and become part of our community!
Activities & Shift
Volunteers mainly help teach English to Buddhist monks at our training center from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm. Activities include conversational English, reading, writing, pronunciation, vocabulary, and fun educational games.
In the mornings, volunteers may assist at a local preschool or participate in other community activities if they wish. Volunteers can use creative teaching methods, prepare simple learning materials, and encourage students to practise English with confidence.
Our schedule is flexible, and we welcome volunteers who bring their own ideas, skills, and enthusiasm. Respect for Buddhist culture and local traditions is important.
Rules
Volunteers are expected to respect Sri Lankan culture, Buddhist traditions, and local customs. Please dress modestly, especially when visiting temples or working with monks. Be punctual, responsible, friendly, and respectful toward everyone. Follow the guidance of the host family and respect the privacy of children, monks, and community members. Ask permission before taking or sharing photographs. Keep the accommodation clean, respect other guests, and inform the host in advance about changes to your schedule. We encourage a positive attitude, cultural exchange, and a willingness to contribute to our community projects.
