Program Details

We're developing a new permaculture and ecological regeneration project in the beautiful countryside of Alto Minho, northern Portugal. Our aim is to create a productive, biodiverse and resilient landscape, combining food production, native woodland restoration, sustainable land management and practical ecological solutions.

Volunteers become part of our small, friendly household, sharing everyday life while contributing to the development of the project. We offer accommodation, meals and opportunities to learn about permaculture, regenerative agriculture, biodiversity and sustainable living.

We welcome people from different backgrounds, particularly those with an interest in nature, environmental restoration and practical outdoor work. No specialist experience is required, although enthusiasm, independence, reliability and a willingness to learn are essential.

This is a hands-on experience rather than a holiday retreat. We value mutual respect, cooperation, initiative and a genuine desire to contribute. In return, you\'ll have time to explore the beautiful surrounding region, including forests, rivers, mountains, beaches and traditional Portuguese villages.

Activities & Shift

Volunteers help for approximately 5 hours per day, 5 days per week, with 2 days off to relax or explore the region. Working hours are generally 9-12am and 1-3pm, particularly during warmer weather, although schedules can be flexible depending on the season and activities.

Typical tasks include planting trees, vegetables and shrubs; preparing growing beds; composting and mulching; improving soil fertility; maintaining paths and gardens; clearing invasive vegetation; collecting and processing natural materials; and helping establish food forests and wildlife habitats.

There may also be opportunities to assist with simple construction, painting, repairs, organising tools and maintaining shared spaces, depending on your interests and abilities.

Tasks vary with the weather, season and project priorities. Some activities involve physical work outdoors, so a reasonable level of fitness and a willingness to get your hands dirty are important.

We provide guidance and equipment, and encourage volunteers to share ideas and contribute creatively to the project.

Rules

We aim to maintain a relaxed, welcoming and respectful environment, with a few basic expectations to ensure a positive experience for everyone.

Volunteers are expected to honour agreed working hours, arrive on time, communicate openly and take responsibility for their tasks. Please let us know in advance if you are unwell, need time off or have any concerns.

Respect for other people, animals, nature and shared spaces is essential. Everyone helps keep communal areas clean and tidy, including the kitchen and bathroom. Please use tools and equipment responsibly, follow safety guidance and avoid unnecessary waste of water, electricity or food.

Smoking is not permitted indoors. Excessive alcohol consumption, drug use, aggressive behaviour and disrespect towards others are not acceptable.

We appreciate independence and initiative, but also recognise the importance of asking questions when unsure. Our approach is based on cooperation, fairness, mutual consideration and a shared commitment to making the project a success.

Above all, please come with realistic expectations, a positive attitude and a genuine willingness to participate!
