Program Details

Welcome to La Roca Ecoturismo! We are John and Marcela, and we invite you to share everyday life on our family finca in the mountains of Arcabuco, Boyacá, Colombia. Our 40 hectare property brings together farm animals, nature trails and rural tourism.

We welcome responsible, friendly travelers who enjoy nature and practical activities. Previous experience is appreciated, and beginners willing to learn are welcome too. We will explain the tasks and match activities to your experience and confidence.

Cultural exchange is part of the experience. Practice Spanish with our family and Colombian guests, share stories about your country, and help interested guests practice English or other languages. Perfect Spanish is not necessary; patience, friendliness and a willingness to communicate go a long way.

Stays are between two and four weeks, giving us time to learn from each other and work together.

Activities & Shift

You will help for 25 hours per week, normally five hours a day over five days, with two full days off. We will agree on your schedule before arrival. Some animal care takes place early in the morning; any split shifts will be discussed in advance and included within the agreed hours.

Activities may include:

• Feeding animals, checking their water and cleaning their areas.
• Helping milk our cows after instruction and supervised practice.
• Gardening, planting and caring for outdoor spaces.
• Cleaning cabins, making beds and preparing accommodation for arriving guests.
• Welcoming guests and sharing friendly conversations and cultural exchanges.
• Helping with basic repairs, painting or decorating when agreed and suitable for your skills.

During our busy season, especially November and December, more of the scheduled help may involve cabin preparation and guest hospitality. You will not be expected to do every activity each day. We will explain priorities and provide guidance.

Rules

Please be punctual, reliable and respectful toward our family, guests, other volunteers and animals. Let us know promptly if you are unwell, delayed or unsure about a task.

Follow our instructions when handling animals or using tools. Milking requires training and supervised practice before helping independently. Only undertake tasks you have been shown how to do, and tell us if you feel uncomfortable.

Bring clothing suitable for cool, rainy weather and sturdy footwear for outdoor activities. Keep shared spaces tidy and respect privacy and quiet when guests are resting. Ask permission before photographing people or posting their images online.

Please help us conserve water, care for nature and handle waste responsibly. Discuss any visitors with us beforehand.

We respect your agreed hours and two full days off. Please communicate openly so we can resolve concerns and make the exchange enjoyable for everyone.

La Roca is a family-friendly place, and we ask you to help us maintain a peaceful, respectful atmosphere. An occasional beer or other alcoholic drink during your free time is fine in moderation, but drunkenness, drinking parties and recreational drug use are not allowed on the property. Please do not drink alcohol before or during your scheduled activities, especially when caring for animals or using tools.
