Program Details

We already have a wonderful chef taking care of our meals, and we're looking for someone who can support him with the everyday tasks that keep the kitchen running smoothly.

You'll be working closely with our main chef, helping with food preparation, chopping vegetables, organising ingredients, grocery runs, serving meals and keeping everything clean and organised.

This is a hands-on position where you'll get to experience the rhythm of a hostel kitchen, learn a few things about cooking and perhaps even try your hand at preparing some dishes over time!

We're looking for someone reliable, proactive and comfortable working as part of a team.

Hygiene is particularly important in this role. We expect everyone to be mindful of food safety, cleanliness and the overall condition of the kitchen. We also encourage all our volunteers to help maintain the hostel's shared spaces and treat the property like their own home.

Activities & Shift

- Washing, peeling and chopping vegetables and fruits.
-Preparing ingredients and assisting with basic food preparation.
-Helping the chef with whatever secondary tasks are required.
-Organising ingredients, kitchen supplies and storage.
-Helping with grocery shopping and collecting supplies when needed.
-Assisting with setting up and serving meals.
-Clearing tables and helping with dishes.
-Washing utensils, pots, pans and kitchen equipment.
-Keeping countertops, preparation areas and the kitchen clean and organised.
-Helping with simple cooking tasks as you become familiar with the kitchen.

Shifts & flexibility:

This position requires a more structured schedule than our other volunteer roles.
You'll need to be available during agreed meal preparation and service hours, particularly during peak kitchen times. Your schedule will be coordinated with our main chef.
On quieter days, if the workload permits, you may be able to take some additional time off after informing.
Good food hygiene practices and maintaining a clean kitchen throughout your shift are essential.

We also encourage you to help maintain the general upkeep of the hostel, helping keep shared areas neat and flagging anything that needs attention.

Rules

Treat it like your home: Please look after the property and help us maintain a clean, hygienic and organised environment. You're not expected to replace our housekeeping team, but we appreciate everyone pitching in, cleaning up after themselves and flagging anything that needs attention.

Be respectful: Treat fellow volunteers, guests and the local team with kindness and consideration. Respect everyone's personal space and differences.

Be proactive and responsible: Take initiative, honour your agreed responsibilities, communicate openly and let the team know if something needs attention or if you need help.

Most importantly, have fun, meet lovely people and enjoy being part of the Happy Hippie family! 🌴
