Program Details
Our café crew is small & chill—just myself, my partner Jared, & 1 or 2 work exchanges at a time.
You’ll also be spending time with the campground crew, as you’ll be hanging out, bunking, eating, & sharing communal spaces with them. The campground crew consists of 7 permanent staff & usually ranges from 5–10 work exchange staff & can grow to 15 during peak periods.
We all live in a secluded, private area of the campground where we have built our own little community space. It's a beautiful spot with dorms, caravans & camp areas, our own bathrooms, washing machine & social areas.
Enjoy being surrounded by the ocean with the closest beach access just across the road!
Please note, we live a really basic lifestyle & are surrounded by the bush (yes, there will be lots of cool wildlife - including bugs). You will spend almost all your time outdoors & there is very limited internet & phone signal.
We cook & eat in the camp kitchen, your breakfast is self-serve. Lunch & dinner are cooked & enjoyed together. We do not provide snacks between meals.
Please note: meals are provided by the campground, not the cafe, so we don’t oversee the food! All crew members take turns cooking & contributing to shared meals.
Note from campground regarding meals:
Being quite remote we need to have a 'one menu fits all' attitude about our food. We all take turns cooking dinner every night, so cooking is important & a great family moment every day! We do 1 food shop a week & since we all eat together, we cannot cater to many different diets/wishes. Catering for vegetarians is totally fine, but only if you are not too fussy (your food can be cooked near meat etc). However, we can NOT cater to vegan/dairy/gluten free diets or heavy allergies. We're sorry but it has proven to be too difficult.
Activities & Shift
Because our café crew is small, everyone is an all-rounder!
A typical day involves general cleaning and upkeep of both front and back of house. Tasks include washing dishes, wiping benches, clearing tables, running food, prepping ingredients, preparing and serving food and drinks, greeting customers, taking and fulfilling orders, and more.
For those already trained — or staying long term with the opportunity to train — there are also additional roles such as Barista or Chef Hand / Cook, alongside general all-rounder responsibilities.
You’ll be scheduled on either an opening shift or a closing (shutdown) shift.
SHIFTS:
Times can vary, but typical shifts look like:
• 7am - 11am
• 8am –12pm
• 10:30am - 3pm (30 minute lunch break with crew)
• 5pm–9pm Saturday (for dinner service and our much loved open mic jam night!)
The cafe is open:
OFF PEAK:
4-5 days a week, usually
Thursday to Monday, 8am–2pm
Saturday nights, 5–9pm
Closed Tuesday & Wednesday (sometimes Thursday)
ON PEAK:
Open 7 days during school holidays and peak periods
7am - 2pm
Opening shifts usually start at 7 - 8am and finish around midday.
Closing shifts start around 9am or 10am and finish at 3pm, with a lunch break from 1 - 1:30pm.
You’ll work 4–7 hours per day, 4-5 days a week, with 2-3 consecutive days off.
Or 6 days a week with 1 day off during peak periods.
This will total 24 hours per week.
