Co-create a permaculture farm from the ground up in rural Sichuan
The experience
We have a plot of land near Chengdu and a bold vision: to transform it into a regenerative
permaculture farm and champion sustainable rural lifestyles. This means ecologically restorative practices that are good for the soil and biodiversity, healthier food produced, eco-buildings made from natural materials, gardens for nature therapy and a place where travelers and locals come together for cultural exchange and to learn from each other.

Program Details
We’re at the very beginning, so the work is experimental and the design is still open. Come join us to start shaping it, from sowing the first seeds and structures to designing the café counter and the story we tell about the project.
You’ll stay with our family on our nearby farm property, eat your meals at a shared table, and spend your days with a community passionate about intentional living and experiences. It’s a chance to help create something meaningful, to make friends and get a much better understanding of the real China than the usual tour routes give.
We’re looking for people interested in co-creating this together. If you’re mainly looking for free accommodation with minimal involvement, this probably isn’t the right place.
What you offer
We’d like you to come with an open mindset, and a willingness to learn about Chinese culture as well as a willingness to share your own. We need help in seven key areas. You don’t need to be a pro at them all, but tell us which one fits you best.
● Permaculture and farming: preparing beds, composting, planting, look after farm animals etc.
● Landscape design (garden and flowers): planning and planting garden areas, flower beds and paths that fit the farm’s permaculture plan.
● Eco-building design: designing natural buildings and structures e.g. 3D design, testing clay and mud mixes, and learning local methods alongside us.
● Carpentry, painting and decorating: building and repairing with wood/bamboo, such as structures, benches, shelving and simple furniture.
● Photography: documenting the land, the building work, the seasons and the people
● Social media: filming, editing and writing about the project, and helping us reach other travelers who’d like to join.
● Barista (café): running the café.
Activities & Shift
25 hours per week, 2 days off.
Work timings are flexible and depend on what needs doing that day. The farm doesn’t run on office hours; some days start early, and rain changes the plan. What stays steady: we have a communal lunch around 1pm and dinner around 7pm.
Rules
● Stay at least 1 week; longer is welcome.
● Openness and willingness to exchange cultures
● Proactivity in helping in communal life (e.g. taking turns to do the dishes after meals and keeping spaces clean and tidy)
● Preferably starting in late December.
● Intermediate English and/or Chinese
● Self-motivation/taking initiative
● Respect for local people and culture
● Teamwork: we host volunteers from around the world with different backgrounds and personalities, [nonviolent communication and willingness to adapt]
