Program Details

ECEA (Iroom Cultural Exchange Association) is a non-profit international cultural exchange organization that brings together people from Korea and the world to share culture and experiences and to create new value with local communities.

We operate Korean language and Korean culture education, international exchange, peace education, cultural heritage and local culture projects, based in a rural village near the DMZ in Yeoncheon County, Gyeonggi Province, about two hours from Seoul.

In 2026, we were selected for the UNESCO World Heritage Volunteers (WHV) project and carried out cultural heritage education and international exchange activities with domestic and international youth.

From August to October 2027, we plan to implement a new WHV project centered on the Gwangneung Royal Tombs and the Gwangneung Forest. Depending on project selection and operational circumstances, there may be opportunities to participate in related activities.

Yeoncheon is rich in natural, historical, and cultural resources, including the DMZ, the Imjin River, UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, and the Hantangang World Geopark. In particular, from November to February it is a special area that hosts many migratory birds.

We are looking for cultural exchange partners who are not simply volunteers performing fixed tasks but partners who can fuse their talents with local resources to create tangible outputs.

We can propose diverse projects such as language education, photography and video production, SNS content, cooking, art, cultural experiences, ecological and cultural heritage exploration.

Even in periods without a confirmed project, we can jointly plan new activities tailored to participants’ interests and abilities.

We welcome people who want to experience Korea’s rural and DMZ region culture, engage with residents, and create meaningful outputs with their talents.

Rules

1. Mutual respect and responsibility

We view participants as cultural exchange colleagues, not just labor. Respect each other’s culture and way of life, and participate in committed activities responsibly.

2. Travel insurance mandatory

All participants must enroll in traveler insurance applicable during Korea stay. Enrollment status will be confirmed before activities begin.

3. Independent living

Our center is not a farm, nor a space where organizers reside permanently. There may be days when you live independently.

Suitable for those who understand Korea’s rural environment and can live independently.

4. Activity planning and scheduling

Participants should share their areas of interest and project ideas before the visit. Specific activity details and schedules are decided in advance through consultation with the organizers.

5. Facility use and cleanliness

Keep the lodging and shared facilities clean, and take good care of facilities and items.

6. Participation fee and operating expenses

ECEA is a nonprofit organization and does not rely on regular sponsorship. The costs borne by participants mainly cover housing maintenance, electricity/water/heating, ingredients, transportation for local cultural exploration, and experiential costs, used for actual stay and program operations.

Participation fees and inclusions are disclosed in advance; personal travel and optional experiences may incur separate costs.

7. Submission of original photo/video files

Participants must submit the original photo/video files and final outputs produced during the agreed project before the end of the activity. If needed, share editable work files for design and educational materials. Personal travel photos or private creative works are excluded from submission.

8. Copyright usage agreement signature required

All participants must read and sign the 'Original Submission of Creative Works and Copyright Use Agreement' before starting activities. Copyright belongs to the creator unless otherwise provided by law or separate agreement. Participants grant the association permission to use the agreed project outputs for nonprofit activities, education, promotion, exhibitions, documentation, annual reports, international exchange, and competition submissions within the scope stated in the agreement. Submitting original files does not imply automatic transfer of copyright.

9. Contest submissions and prizes

If the association and participant jointly plan and produce outputs for a contest, within the host organization’s rules, the joint name of ECEA and the actual contributing creators should be listed. In case of prize winnings, the joint participation and the contributor’s role should be respected. If money or prizes arise, their use and distribution should be decided by a separate written agreement prior to submission.

10. Portrait rights and privacy

When filming or interviewing locals or other participants, obtain prior consent. Do not use others’ photos, videos, or music without permission.

11. Safety and community respect

Yeoncheon is a rural area with limited public transport. Plan external activities and travel carefully and follow safety guidelines. Respect access restrictions near the DMZ and residents’ daily life and privacy.

12. Proactive communication and cooperation

If difficulties arise or schedules need to change, discuss with organizers in advance. We look forward to creating meaningful cultural exchange activities by respecting each other’s talents and experiences.
