We are looking for one or two WWOOFers to live on site and help us care for Wallingford Homestead, a historic luxury country homestead in beautiful Central Hawke’s Bay, on New Zealand’s North Island.
Formerly known as Wallingford Station, the homestead has a rich history and now operates as both luxury accommodation and an award-winning restaurant, welcoming guests from New Zealand and around the world. We host up to 14 in-house guests at a time, along with occasional group functions, private stays, and special events.
Wallingford sits within peaceful grounds and gardens, with a swimming pool, pool house, vegetable and herb gardens, orchard, truffle trees and plenty of seasonal projects underway.
We have an extensive vegetable and herb garden in development, along with a productive orchard growing apples, pears, plums, citrus, quince, feijoa and stone fruit. Black Périgord truffles are also part of our unique seasonal harvest. Wherever possible, produce from the gardens, orchard and grounds is woven into Christopher’s ever-changing restaurant menu, making Wallingford a truly estate-to-plate experience.
This would suit practical, thoughtful people who enjoy being part of a working country homestead, helping with gardens, grounds, seasonal harvests and the day-to-day rhythm of a special hospitality property.
The exchange is negotiable. As Wallingford is a working hospitality property, weekend help is often needed, so you may be rostered on Saturday and/or Sunday.
If you would like to join us, we are looking for practical, willing people who are happy to help with a mix of everyday tasks and larger seasonal projects.
Everyday tasks may include:
Chopping and stacking wood, and preparing fireplaces
Collecting fruit from the orchard
General tidying and clean-up around the property
Light maintenance jobs
Some light cleaning in the homestead
Helping with dishes when needed
Supporting the general rhythm of a working country property
Larger projects may include:
Helping restore or tidy up older buildings
Painting projects
Building and developing the vegetable garden
Laying garden pathways
General gardening and grounds work
Heavier physical jobs around the property
Carpentry, painting, gardening, or practical maintenance skills would be very welcome, but the main things we are looking for are a good attitude, a willingness to help, and the ability to work both independently and alongside us.
Volunteer accommodation is provided in a clean and cosy residence adjacent to the homestead, approximately 100 metres away. There will be no more than two volunteers staying there at any one time.
The residence has its own kitchen and bathroom. Each volunteer can have their own bedroom, or couples may share a room if preferred.
We provide one meal per day, usually dinner, and some basic essentials for you to prepare your own breakfast and lunch. These may include eggs, bread, fruit, vegetables and other simple staples.
As Wallingford is a working luxury accommodation and restaurant property, the homestead and guest facilities are reserved for paying guests when they are staying with us. This includes areas such as the swimming pool, pool house, guest lounges and other homestead spaces.
We ask volunteers to be respectful of guest privacy and the peaceful atmosphere of the property at all times.
