The experience

Teach English to adults and children at our school in Vidigal (three afternoons per week).

Live at our pousada in Vidigal in a glass-fronted shared room opening out directory onto the rainforest, with uninterrupted views of the ocean. There’s a 75 step walk down from the road but that’s a price worth paying for hearing the waves rather than traffic noise.

Program Details

Our volunteers always form a close community while living and teaching alongside each other here at Casa do Mar, and we make sure to help organize regular Churrascos, Waterfall hikes, and afternoon body surfing excursions.

Every other month, we hold a 4-week Personal Development Program (PDP) meeting daily at 11 a.m. for a group meditation and structured discussion on some of life’s biggest questions. Some of our participants only speak either English or Portuguese, so our facilitator makes sure to translate as we go. The curriculum borrows from key texts in philosophy and spirituality.

Activities & Shift

Classes are held from 16h-19h30 on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Mondays and Fridays are kept free for excursions and prolonging the weekend. Every 2 weeks, we take the kids from the school on a rock climbing expedition with a local guide, where the kids surprise themselves with their courage. Many of our participants teach English online for work, and we have a new, secluded, co-working space that opens up directly into the rainforest. You can work here undisturbed, save for the occasional passing monkey!

Rules

The house rules are that you can have one visitor per day, don't slam doors, do wear headphones for music, and most importantly, clean up after yourself. Cooking between 7am and 10pm, quiet time between 10pm and 7am, no drugs, but weed and alcohol can be used in moderation or abused on your birthday. No sex in the dorm but there are romantic roof top areas that can be used for conjugal visits. People causing disturbances will be asked to leave.
