Program Details

You will be treated like family. You will stay in our home, in your private bedroom, with laundry, unlimited internet, free transfers and meals supplied.
This is a help-out where you can position yourself, but we tend to foster your existing interests while also teaching you new skills.
In particular, we will teach you about the equine discipline of endurance riding.

Our life revolves around our horses and travelling 🧳 to endurance events.
There may be a weekend where you may just farm/cat/horses/house-sitting. This is a quiet time centred around caring for the horses, cat, and gardens to keep everything fed and watered while we are away. However, normally you will be invited to join us on our trips away.

We begin each day feeding horses and then sit down to eat bacon, eggs and avocado[when in season]. We follow a predominantly Paleo diet [no grains or legumes], just wholesome, unprocessed foods sourced from free-range, wild, or grass-fed producers. We don't eat much during the day. A piece of fruit, a slice of cake, and a cuppa. Dinner is salad or veggies with meat [maybe curry, bolognese, stroganoff, chilli con carne, soup]
Capable horse riders will experience Australian life in peaceful bushlands, viewing Australian wildlife such as goannas, emus, echidnas, kookaburras, kangaroos 🦘 , koalas 🐨, snakes, etc
We have lots of horses 🐴 available for your adventures on our miles and miles of tracks. We have lots of new foals born each year, and we handle them.
If you like cities and lots of people, then this is not for you. If you love nature and quiet, then you are in the right place!
Many of our volunteers have happily ended their time with us by riding in a 40km endurance event. For most, their stay at Flemingo was the highlight of their time in Australia.

Activities & Shift

We are looking for confident & capable horse people who want to experience our way of life and are prepared to step in when I/we don’t have enough hands or time.
Please don’t apply if you want to spend the majority of your time inside a bedroom or studying.
In the Endurance season, there will be plenty of opportunities and perhaps even the opportunity to strap or compete in a 40km endurance event.
Some riders who have stayed longer have become qualified endurance riders, reaching Open Endurance Status - an amazing achievement 👏😊🏇

There will usually be one or two volunteers at a time.

This position would suit a backpacker or volunteer interested in a cultural rural exchange, offering an experience revolving around horses.

We need help on the farm with the horses, in the garden, and in the home. Typically, nothing very strenuous ... just lending a hand.
Feeding out hay to the horses each day in the morning and evening.
Then each day varies. It just depends on what needs to be done. You may be opening gates so the tractor can pass through, putting horses on the walker, treating horses, helping to move horses, weed pulling or spraying, moving hay around, cleaning water troughs, catching and saddling horses, cleaning tack, rug-unrug horses and feeding the cat, assisting with preparing the evening meal, setting the table, maybe doing a load of washing or helping to keep the house clean.
No stables.

Days off happen when it rains, or we are travelling to/from endurance events.

Most afternoons are spent with the horses: going out for a ride, [walk, trot, and canter] as the sun sets, viewing many Australian animals in the bushland.
You must be fit and able to ride for at least two hours each day.

Happy for WHV people to apply to do 88 or 176 days as a volunteer.

Rules

No smoking in the house, and shoes off, please.
Leave things as you find them or better. Eg clean benches; clean sink
Must be prepared to ride horses every day during endurance season [January through October]. Must be a confident rider, as we are not in a position to teach you how to ride.🙏 🦩 🐎🏇

Responsible for your own alcohol purchase. So if you like a drink, please buy your own. 🍷 🍺

Please speak English.

Quiet time after 10 pm through to 7 am. 💤🛌

Must be willing to chip in to complete daily chores, eg prepare meals, do laundry, and keep the house tidy.

88/176 WHV days are possible for volunteers with a good work ethic and who can ride confidently. Every day counts as a volunteer, as we are in a disaster-affected postcode area [2360].

Please respect power and water usage, as we are off the grid and reliant on sunshine for power & water from the sky to drink & shower. 🌧️ ☀️

Bring your smiles and enjoy your stay 😊

This is not a clock-in/clock-out position. It is an “experience” where you get to walk in my shoes and live a part of my life revolving around horses. Travelling to/from events nearly every second weekend is when we have "time off" from the normal routine. We hope you love it & enjoy life in our little place of paradise💕
