The experience

For this position, we are looking for someone who can play and engage with James, our 10 month old son, while we exercise or work around the house. Typically it would be 3-4 hours a day, around 1-2 hours at a time.

We would love you to speak to our boy in your native language as it is our believe that it helps him to understand the diversity of our world. Ideal person is someone who love kids, fun and engaging for the young mind.


What you offer

21 hours of help per week

Gardening: Help grow plants and cultivate gardens

Child Care: Caring for, playing with, and spending time with children.


What you get

1 day off per week

Shared Dorm: You will have a bed in a shared room, which means you will share the same room with other travelers.

Team Dorm: You will have a bed in a shared room, which means you will share the same room with other people.

Breakfast: You are entitled to a free breakfast, every day of your stay.

Lunch: You are entitled to a free lunch, every day of your stay.

Dinner: You are entitled to a free dinner, every day of your stay.

Free Laundry: You can use our laundry room freely.

Bikes at your disposal: You can use our bikes any time you want.

Language lessons: Take free language classes at our place.

Use our equipped kitchen: Feel free to use our kitchen and make your own delicious food.


Requirements

Only hosts solo volunteers (doesn’t accept couples or partners)

Program Details

WORK SCHEDULE
*️️️️️️️️️ Min Stay: 4 week
*️️️️️️️️️ Everyday but hours are flexible as long as rooms are ready (~ 1-3 hours)

LOCATION (15 minutes or less from most of Detroit's major attractions)
*️️️️️️️️️ 3.2km (2 miles) from Downtown Detroit
*️️️️️️️️️ 1.6km (1 mile) from Belle Isle (Detroit's famous & beautiful island park)

BIKES
*️️️️️️️️️ Bikes are an important part of our regular transportation and as a volunteer you will have access to a bike during your stay so you can explore the city

ACCOMMODATION
*️️️️️️️️️ Single bed in shared room or private room depending on availability

FOOD
*️️️️️️️️️ Groceries & basic food are included. You can help yourself with the food in the kitchen. You can buy anything else you need in the groceries store


Activities & Shift

Daily task will start with:
- Play and talk to James will be what we need help with first and foremost. Typically it will be 1-2 hours at a time and 3-4 hours each day.

After that, you can choose to help on:
- Gardening
- Cooking
- Community Work

All volunteers should:
- Help guests check-in when they arrive
- Turn on/off the external light of the house depending on the time of the day
- Clean up after yourself


Rules

Spirit of the House:
- Mi casa es su casa: Treat our house like yours. Have a great time. Clean up after yourself. Leave the space better for the next traveller if you can.

- Keep Learning: We've all done things for the first time. Take the challenge and you will learn. When you face a challenge with your work, come to us with a suggestion instead of a question. Look around and if you see things could be done better? Change it.

- Work Hard Play Hard: How much you put into this experience will change how much you get out of the experience. Value your time and don't forget your initial goals of your stay.

Specific Rules related to James:
- Do not bring James outside the house unless Jenny or Alex approves
- Do not feed James with anything with sugar
- Choking hazardous objects and food should be avoided
