Program Details

We are an agroecological farm located in the northern part of Costa Rica, in Upala. We produce a variety of fruits and vegetables and raise animals for both self-consumption and sale of surplus. Everything is cultivated using innovative and traditional ecological techniques. We also participate in the development of the Upala canton, offering agroecology courses for groups of students. We work together with NGOs and national universities. In addition, we participate in reforestation to support the recovery and development of threatened species and to establish a balance between agriculture and ecology.

Activities & Shift

Our activities are very varied. A volunteer can contribute, first, to agricultural work:
- Preparation of organic inputs
- Planting, maintenance and harvesting of agricultural products
- Maintenance of the organic garden, the biointensive beds and the medicinal garden, establishment of syntropic agroforestry systems and analogues
- Feeding of farm animals
- Gardening and maintenance of green areas in general
- Maintenance of wooden infrastructure
We also host tourists year-round, so you can assist with guest services and preparatory activities such as cleaning and tidying rooms, meal preparation on request, guided tours for visitors, etc. Another important part of our farm is reforestation, in which you will participate by preparing substrate for sowing tree seeds, for example caobilla, mamonchino, espavel, arazá, cedar, laurel and gallinazo, among others.

Rules

We would like to give you some details about the finca surroundings: Upala is an area with a humid tropical climate; it can rain throughout the year and there can be a lot of sun. We recommend bringing rain gear and light clothing, mosquito repellent and sunscreen.
The finca is located in nature, where you can encounter or hear animals, birds, wild mammals, insects and tropical reptiles day and night. In addition, we are a pet-friendly place; we have a pack of 9 dogs roaming freely. So you have to live with them on the finca.
We also ask that you take care of the common areas we provide (lounge, kitchen, bathrooms). Your stay on the finca should be lived and felt with a lot of respect for everyone and for everything, as if it were your own home, taking care of personal cleanliness and the places you use, being orderly and very, very respectful of all forms of life.
