Volunteering at the community was a fantastic experience. Rick and Ruthie and the rest of the community were incredibly welcoming and they really care for the volunteers - showing us around the district and helping us get to buses to see the district. Tasks were challenging at times, but Rick is great at explaining what to do and how to do them. Ruthie's cooking was fantastic and the kitchen was well stocked with breakfast supplies. It was a great place to meet other travellers and volunteers at various stages in their journeys, and a fantastic platform from which to explore the district.

My experience here was brilliant! I could not have asked for better hosts as Rick and Ruthie were amazing from start to finish. From supporting me through the work we did, to meals, accommodating our activities on the weekend, picking us up and dropping us off at stations on arrival and departure, they really went above and beyond! I would recommend anyone who is thinking of volunteering here to do so it is somewhere I would definitely volunteer again in future. They made us all feel welcome, I learned skills I never thought I would, and really made us feel at home with them.

I really loved my time at Rick and Ruthie's. They were incredibly welcoming, heartfelt and generous. Not only did they show us around the area, Rick also explained and showed us everything we needed or wanted to know about building, the work was so fun! I also don't think I have eaten that well for two weeks straight in a long time, thank you Ruthie for the incredible food and also for being so accommodating with me being vegan (they had always so many options for me to eat). Besides the nice work, the nature was also extremely beautiful and I met really great people there. Thank you so much!

My first venture into volunteer travel has been absolutely wonderful. Rick and Ruthie were extremely accommodating, only asking that we do our part as well as expected. Rick was patient and instructive in showing us how to go about the build and using tools. He gave us positive feedback and made room for comments and concerns. Ruthie was kind and amazing in making sure we had gorgeous meals every work day, as did Rick when Ruthie was away. She provided a calming and welcoming presence and shared her passion of gardening with us. It will feel very strange not to be here. Thank you!

My time here was very special. The place felt incredibly peaceful, the meals were always delicious and everybody was kind and welcoming. Working on the house is super exciting as you're always learning something new and it adquires a different meaning when you learn what the project represents to Rick and Ruth. We finished early and had lots of downtime, which worked out great for me as I had to work and catch up on some studying, while weekends we had off to explore the Lake District. Big thanks to Rick and Ruth for always going out of their way to make sure we were having a nice stay xx

I couldn't have asked for more generous hosts for my first Worldpackers experience! Rick and Ruthie truly looked after me; giving lifts, taking us on beautiful walks and sharing their knowledge and passion for the Lakes and sustainable living. The tents are spacious and Ruthie never failed to cook delicious food! Rick is patient and makes everyone feel included in the project. He made sure to give us variety of tasks throughout the day, so I learnt a lot! I loved bonding with the other volunteers and will cherish our chats around the fire pit <3 Also, shoutout to Chris' divine guacamole ;)

Volunteering with Rick, Ruth, and Xav was an incredible experience! Learning natural building techniques firsthand was amazing, especially with Rick constantly sharing his thought process, making us feel truly part of the project. The house is surrounded by beautiful nature, and Ruth’s vegetarian cooking is absolutely delicious! There’s a wonderful community vibe. We bonded deeply with other volunteers around evening bonfires, and neighbors Chris and Kate were lovely too. A perfect, immersive experience to learn sustainable construction. Highly recommended!
