Escola Casa do Mar (ECDM) hosts 6 volunteer English teachers per month in Vidigal, a favela in Rio, that the Guardian called "the safest favela in Rio." We teach almost 50 students per week.

Activities & Shift

Each volunteer contributes 12-15 hours per week, teaching 2–3 hours per day over five weekdays. There are no classes on weekends, allowing time for rest, preparation, and personal activities. There are some teaching shifts in the morning and some in the evening, and volunteers can negotiate trading shifts, but all volunteers are expected to show up for classes.

Rules

We follow standard community living guidelines, asking everyone to respect one another and care for shared spaces. A cleaner comes daily to assist, but all residents are expected to clean up after themselves and maintain a tidy environment.
