Join Our Family in the Heart of Alberta, Canada!
The experience
We’re a family of five living in Beaumont, Alberta—a small city just 10 minutes outside the provincial capital. Our home has a big backyard, two cats, two sweet dogs, and a chatty pair of cockatiels. I work from home as a piano teacher and photographer. Our kids(ages 7, 4 and 2) keep us very busy and entertained. We are really just down-to-earth family people who love to share our home with gals who love kids and want to make real connection.

Program Details
Our kids are 7, 3 and 2 years old, and they bring plenty of energy, laughter, and busyness to our days. We are looking for a volunteer who enjoys children and homemaking to join our family rhythm. Day-to-day help usually looks like spending about three to four hours with the children (mostly in the afternoons), along with an hour or so of tidying, laundry, meal prep, cleaning, gardening, or pet care.
The most important thing to us is finding someone who loves being around kids and is proactive about pitching in when things need doing. We ask our volunteers to stay for three to four months at a time, since this gives everyone the chance to settle in and build a real connection with us and the children.
Our volunteer windows are typically as follows:
- January-March (3 months)
-April-June (3 months, option to stay longer into the summer)
-September-mid December (3.5 months)
You can expect to become part of our family while you’re here. We’re pretty down-to-earth people who enjoy simple living, homemade food, music, and outdoor adventures. In the summers, when I’m not teaching, I spend my time exploring with the kids, canning and preserving, and sewing.
If this sounds like a good fit for you, we would love to welcome you into our home!
Activities & Shift
We are busy, working parents of three busy littles ones! Things you can expect to help out with are child minding, meal prep, cleaning, laundry, pet care and other household tasks. You can expect to help with childcare for 4 or more hours every day, and tidying/cleaning/helping with household chores for about 1 hour every day. We generally ask that you be available between 7:30am-5:00 pm Monday-Friday, with tasks spread out throughout the day. There are lots of opportunities for breaks and downtime, it just depends on what’s going on that day.
Hours are somewhere between 20-28/week, with some days being longer and some shorter. For example, while Mondays can feel like a longer 7-8 hour day, Thursdays and Fridays you might only have 2-3 hours of work, leaving lots of free time for you near the end of the week. We operate as a team, so we ask that our travelers are proactive, hard working and are ready to jump in and help when needed with a good attitude.
We also understand that you are here to travel and explore a new country and we want you to make time for experiences. We are always willing to give you extra long weekends or time off so that you can take little trips and make the most of your trip.
In return, we’re excited to offer you an apartment style space in our home. The queen sized bed is in a studio-style open area right next to the TV room, where we have several subscriptions and lots of movies you can take advantage of in your spare time. Your private bathroom is right down the hall. I do occasionally have to come down to do work calls or retrieve things from our storage space, but you will more or less have this space to yourself.
The kitchen, including food, is shared. I love to cook but please be prepared to help me with some of the cleanup as needed.
Rules
* We are only accepting female volunteers at this time, sorry guys!
* We want time to get to know you (myself and my husband, but especially our children!), and time for you to get to know us! We are excited at the prospect of building long term relationships and learning about different cultures, as well as sharing ours with you. Our girls typically stay with us 3-4 months; preference will be given to those who wish to stay during one of our preset windows. We’ve been hosting travelers for over 3 years now, and by the time our girls leave us, they genuinely feel like family.
* You must love children! Our wildlings are sassy, sweet, adventurous and around all the time. If you are engaged with them they will fall in love with you, and you will probably fall in love with them right back!
* You must be proactive in looking for things to do. Sometimes I am not great at delegating tasks - I am counting on someone to see what has to be done and jump in to do it.
* While we are willing to offer some assistance with language, it is important that our guests have at least an intermediate understanding in English
* We do not smoke, drink heavily or use recreational drugs. We are raising our children with these values in mind and therefore are not able to accommodate anyone who partake in any of these activities
