Our Project HELP English is firstly taking place in Cerrito de la Virgen, where the Recreational and Educational Centre (REC) of the organisation is located. The REC is used for various projects, such as the HELP English project, where volunteers will teach classes in the afternoon.
Secondly, volunteers will also hold classes in Maria del Socorro, a local primary school in Huanchaco, while collaborating with the local teachers and staff.
Your tasks as a Volunteer/Coordinator include:
Plan and update the HELP English curriculum
Deliver English language lessons to the children at the REC or primary school
Register the children's attendance and ensure that we have their emergency contact details
Maintain and update all material related to the English program
Participate in weekly REC meetings with the other HELP Project Coordinators/Volunteers and REC Coordinator/Program Manager
Be creative in coming up with new ideas and policies to improve our English program.
The OCN recreational centre (REC) opens from Monday to Fridays, from 3-6pm. Each day is 2 different projects take place, such as HELP English and HELP Math.
You will be expected to follow/update the curriculum and lesson plans each week. Before each English class, you will meet with the REC Coordinator and a team of supporting volunteers at the OCN volunteer house to brief them on your lesson plan for the day, delegate roles, and answer any questions. You will then get a mototaxi or bike to the REC together to assist or lead in a class. Although the REC classes finish at 5pm, one hour is left for the kids to play and socialise. You will have plenty of opportunities to play and interact with the children we help and create a bond of trust with them.
Every Monday morning, you will attend a general OCN meeting at the volunteer house to discuss any relevant updates and activities for the week, contribute ideas and feedback, and plan out the activity schedule for the week. Volunteers discuss general issues for the REC, such as discipline and attendance, routines, maintenance etc.
On other weekdays, you will act as a regular multi-project volunteer, with the opportunity to participate in a selection of other projects. For example you could participate in our various taskforces, that are dedicated to Marketing, Outreach, Fundraising etc.
After work, there is plenty of time to catch one of Huanchaco’s world-famous sunsets from the tranquillity of the beach, or indeed from a surfboard. Then there are various options to fill your evening, socializing with local and other volunteers, sampling the famous Peruvian cuisine, attending talks and cultural events, music, dance, theatre, movies- the list is endless.
