Program Details

This offers an opportunity for volunteers to support education, creativity, and community development while experiencing everyday life in rural Uganda. The program is designed to encourage cultural exchange, learning, and meaningful community involvement.

Volunteers can assist in different areas depending on their interests, skills, and experience. Activities at the school may include:

- Assisting teachers in classroom activities
- Helping children practice English reading and conversation
- Supporting arts, music, sports, and creative activities
- Organizing educational games and outdoor activities
- Assisting with homework and after-school learning sessions
- Sharing skills such as computer basics, crafts, environmental awareness, or health education
- Participating in school gardening and sustainability projects
- Supporting community outreach and youth empowerment activities
- Helping improve the school environment through painting, cleaning, or simple maintenance projects
- Engaging in cultural exchange with students and local community members

The program is not only about volunteering but also about learning from the local community, understanding Ugandan culture, and building meaningful connections. Volunteers are encouraged to bring their own ideas, creativity, and positive energy while working together with teachers, students, and community members.

Accommodation and meals can be arranged during the stay with a small contribution from volunteers to support hosting and community project costs. Airport pickup and local orientation can also be organized when needed.

Activities & Shift

This program gives volunteers an opportunity to actively participate in education, creativity, environmental awareness, and community development while experiencing authentic rural life in Uganda. The program is flexible, and volunteers can contribute according to their skills, interests, and experience.

Educational Support Activities

Volunteers can work alongside local teachers to support learning inside and outside the classroom. This may include helping children practice English speaking, reading, pronunciation, writing, mathematics, and other subjects. Volunteers can also assist with homework sessions, revision lessons, and small group learning activities for students who may need extra support.

Creative and Recreational Activities

The program encourages creativity and interaction with children through activities such as art, painting, music, dance, drama, storytelling, photography, and cultural exchange sessions. Volunteers can also organize sports activities including football, volleyball, skipping games, fitness exercises, and outdoor games that encourage teamwork and confidence among students.

Library and Reading Activities

Volunteers may help organize reading sessions, storytelling clubs, and simple library activities to encourage reading culture and improve literacy skills among children. Reading together with students and helping younger children practice pronunciation and comprehension is highly appreciated.

Computer and Skills Development

If volunteers have computer knowledge or other practical skills, they are encouraged to share them with students and youth. This can include basic computer lessons, photography, digital skills, art and crafts, entrepreneurship ideas, environmental education, or language exchange activities.

Environmental and Sustainability Projects

As part of WECO Uganda’s community and environmental focus, volunteers can participate in tree planting, waste management awareness, school gardening, recycling activities, and sustainability projects. Volunteers may also help teach children about environmental conservation and climate awareness through simple practical activities and discussions.

School Improvement and Community Support

Volunteers can support simple improvement projects around the school such as painting classrooms, decorating learning spaces, organizing materials, cleaning compounds, gardening, or helping create child-friendly learning environments. Depending on ongoing projects, volunteers may also participate in community outreach activities and youth empowerment programs.

Cultural Exchange and Community Experience

The program is also about cultural exchange and learning from one another. Volunteers are encouraged to spend time interacting with local families, learning about Ugandan culture, food, music, traditions, and daily life. Community members and children also enjoy learning about different cultures and experiences from volunteers.

Flexible Participation

There is no requirement to be a professional teacher. What matters most is a positive attitude, willingness to learn, creativity, patience, and genuine interest in supporting children and the community. Volunteers are always welcome to introduce their own ideas and activities to make the experience meaningful for everyone involved.

Accommodation and meals can be arranged during the stay with a small contribution from volunteers to support hosting and community project costs. Airport pickup and orientation can also be organized when needed.

Rules

Please be aware that you cannot expect funding for your activities from us or our initiatives. It might be possible that we have a project going on in the field you want to engage but please consult us in advance. In the past we also had volunteers who did their private fundraising to realize their projects. But there is also plenty of work which does not require any money! So you can decide what suits you best and any new ideas are more than welcome. Just let us know :)
