Hvala, Matti & the guest house! (thank you in Slovenian 🇸🇮) My first volunteering experience and I couldn't have wished for a better one! the guest house felt like home from day one: small, cozy and full of family vibes. Matti was always there to help, explained everything clearly and shared the best local tips. The work was easy and well organized, and Code, the sweetest pup, made every day better 🐶 What I'll remember most: sunsets together, beach trips, surf sessions and fun evenings. I felt like part of the family, not just a volunteer. Highly recommend! ¡Pura vida! 🤗💛

I had a wonderful time as a social media volunteer at the guest house. There were many volunteers at the house, which allowed us to be quite social. It was also very evident that Maria and Matias have a lot of experience coordinating volunteers over the years, as there was a clear and smooth process running from the first moment I got in. Even though this is an hostel, every single one of my nights I had completely undisturbed, comfortable sleep. I felt extremely welcomed and would gladly recommend this opportunity to anyone looking for a similar experience.

Lucía! 💙 Thank you so much for taking the time to leave us such a beautiful review.

It was a true pleasure having you as part of the Mai Ke Kai Surf House family. From day one you brought an amazing attitude, a lot of creativity, and an excellent energy with guests and the team.

We’re so glad to hear that you felt welcome, and we wish you all the best in your future travels!

This was my first volunteering experience and the guest house has definitely set the bar high! Maria, Matias and all the other lovely volunteers made me feel so welcome. The shifts were honestly enjoyable, I loved checking in and meeting guests from all over the world. The cleaning was absolutely fine. And the shift times allowed for you to enjoy so much of the day. They were very thoughtful, always made sure us volunteers had enough food, we'd have some lovely dinners, and surf sessions together. I've made some great memories. I wish them all the best as they've built something truly special.

Home away from home! 🌸💖 Big thanks to Tuti and Mati for making me feel like part of the family. The hostel has such a relaxed, cozy vibe, and you can really make the experience your own. The work is straightforward and easy to pick up, leaving plenty of time to enjoy surfing, the beach, nightlife, or just chill. The hosts, manager, and staff are incredibly kind and fun—prepare for lots of laughs and endless card games.

Great time at the guest house ! 🩷 The team was good and the owners are really sweet. Tamarindo is a good place to be for a bit, even if it's a bit expensive 😁

My experience at Maikekai was a mix of feelings. On one hand, Tuti and Mati and the other volunteers were really nice. There's no staff at the hostel, just the volunteers, so maybe that's why. For my experience, if you don't talk spanish this is not the best place. Anyway, I feel very grateful for the opportunity and the surf lessons.

Maria and mati never greeted me or said goodbye, they would often not be at their shifts so guests would come to us off shift with needs, and they provided almost no training then got frustrated when things were done wrong. The hostel has almost no security, I was robbed of 400 dollars and an expensive camera and they never even mentioned it to me. There were cockroaches, raccoons, and so many ants and spiders in/around the house because doors are left open all day. The water frequently stopped working, and the showers and toilets barely worked. It was nothing as promised.

Your comment clearly comes from a place of bad faith, but that’s part of opening our home to people from all over the world.
We’re sorry you didn’t enjoy the experience. Regarding the theft you mentioned, we’re truly sorry it happened, but it’s important to clarify that you left your key on top of your locker.
We’re confident that future volunteers will take into account the many other excellent reviews we’ve received, which reflect the real spirit of our place.

Maria and Matias were amazing hosts, always trying make our experience the best it could be. The free surf lesson is a big plus, and they took us surfing again with them multiple times after that - you only had to rent a board. the guest house is a small surf hostel that was pretty chill during my stay in the green season, but I had a good time with the other volunteers. That being said, I really enjoyed my stay, so don't let that keep you from applying!

I really enjoyed my time at the guest house 😊 Mati and Maria are great hosts, the house is super cosy and I met lots of great people there. The work is easy and fun. I got a good introduction on my first day and a schedule with all my work hours. But if I wanted to switch something it wasn't a problem at all 😊 I also got the opportunity to learn how to surf and really enjoyed that I would definitely recommend the place :)
