I stayed a month at the organization and am quite sad that I already had to leave. The people working there are very welcoming and after some time you feel right at home. You usually teach for two hours in the evening and sometimes work on a project you chose during the day.
During your free time or your days off you can explore the island as much as you like.

I here declare Oskar to be among our best volunteer showing team work during his stay with us. Patience, respect and hard work. He has been positive to all members of the organisation and work positively to our projects. We recommend him to come back at the Good Hope Society

My volunteering experience with the organization in Zanzibar was very positive overall. Volunteers receive accommodation and three daily meals for a €10 day contribution. The house is in a local neighborhood near Stone Town, with shared rooms if other volunteers are present, and other non-volunteer tenants also live there. Activities vary daily, so flexibility is important. Be aware that clothes may need to be washed by hand, and if you value plenty of personal space, you may find the experience quite immersive. The caring team made it truly meaningful and unforgettable. Asante!

My experience at 'the organization' was very good. The house is comfortable with many facilities and the food is fantastic. The people who hosted me were very helpful and attentive to me at all times. I got sick for the last two days, and they were very present regarding my health, they took me to the hospital, made sure I ate well and stayed hydrated. These details are not minor when we are far from home and find ourselves in a situation like this. Thanks Mr. Alright for being so supportive throughout my stay.

Dear Valentina,

Thank you so much for the heart, energy, and dedication you have given during your entire time volunteering at The Good Hope Society. Honestly, we wish you could continue to stay with us, but I believe you are now part of the family, not just a volunteer.

I’m truly sorry you have been unwell — may God grant you strength, good health throughout your journey, and protect you from all illness.

My overall experience could have been better, although the negative aspects were not really related to the organization itself. The only point that affected me directly was not being allowed to walk around the island alone — they always wanted to accompany me, I believe for safety reasons.

Apart from that, the organization is genuinely doing meaningful work. They are dedicated to helping underprivileged children learn English and to gathering school supplies for them, since many parents cannot afford these materials. Their mission is impactful and their commitment to the children is clear.

Dear Valeria,
Thank you for sharing your reflections with such honesty and thoughtfulness. I understand that not walking alone on the island felt limiting, though it was mainly for safety. What stands out most is the NGO’s inspiring mission to support underprivileged children with English learning, and other programs. Your feedback highlights your genuine commitment and meaningful impact. I’m grateful you shared this, as it adds great value in celebrating the NGO and its volunteers.

This experience is the perfect combination of volunteering and leisure to visit the island. We felt at ease from the very start, with the staff and the other volunteers; they were all kind and available. We would have preferred more clarity in the organization, but overall we can't complain. We will definitely come back, in the meantime “asante sana”
