I had the best time at the Old Monastery Hostel! It is such a magical place that feels like home right when you walk in. The hosts Stephen and Silvana are so lovely and welcoming, and the food they make is amazing! (I already miss the smell of homemade breakfast) The work was exactly what I had expected from the description, very fair and no surprises. In my free time I explored the stunning area, went to the local pubs and cafes. If you enjoy nature, cozy places and want to spend your time surrounded by nice people I would recommend the hostel!

Staying at the hostel was wonderful! Stephen and Silvana really made the place feel like home and while Letterfrack is small, it's stunning and a surprisingly busy local hub.

My stay at the hostel was great! The place has a unique charm and allows you to meet all kinds of people as you help around the hostel. The work is as agreed mostly cleaning and other light tasks, and only takes up the morning. Stephen and Silvana are caring hosts and made me feel welcome with tips and stories about the place and Irish culture. Plus, they're wonderful at cooking so I really enjoyed breakfast and dinner during my stay. Letterfrack is a small village but well connected with buses to explore Connemara and even further. I recommend this place, and thank you again!!🙏

If you're reading this, I would definitely recommend staying at the hostel! My friend and I had a wonderful experience in the heart of Connemara with the hostel being right next to Diamond Hill. The work was very laid-back and the hours and days off well respected while still giving you a taste of what hostel life can be like in the off season. The hosts were very kind and made sure we had everything we needed throughout the stay. We could not have asked for a better place to stay in these cold winter months. Thank you for everything <3

I'll try to be as concise as possible in telling about my month there.
The place/area really deserves a visit since it's cool, rural and gives and idea of what the "true" Ireland is.
With this said, the experience at the hostel was definitely not as agreed and not something I thought possible in a volunteering experience. The behaviour of the owners towards specific people (choose without any 'reasonable' criteria btw) is unacceptable, rude, offensive and non sense. They deliberately chose to make my time, efforts etc. harder compared to other volunteers and for nothing that I actually did. 🤷

The hostel was the most perfect first volunteering experience. The hostel itself is the most comfortable and beautiful place I have ever been to and you feel at home immediately. The work you do is very laid back and routine and you have an unbelievable amount of free time. Silvana is very generous with assigning tasks and is always available to you if you need anything. Connemara is one of my most favourite places I have ever been and I'm so happy I got to explore it during my month at the hostel. I was very lucky to stay in a caravan all to myself.

If you're into the vintagey/eclectic vibe you will absolutely love staying there. The Hostel is so cute and you can tell how much this Hostel has grown it's personality over time. There are a lot of guests who make art there and Silvana makes sure to curate a cozy and artsy inviroment. I stayed in the caravan outside so i did had my own space which was nice. The working hours were great and respected. We had a 3 day weekend where the hosts were on a holiday which was a bit intense but also a great learning experience. I feel like my english got more fluent. I would come back again☺️

My stay here was simply amazing! Silvana and Stephen are so kind and supportive... We could chat about a lot of things; the food is delicious and the hostel is so unique. The first time I arrived here, I felt like I was in a movie; it's a beautiful and lovely place. If you love reading, there are books everywhere, and you can practise English and Spanish chatting with the guests and also with Silvana. The tasks are easy, and you'll have plenty of time to rest, go hiking and meet the surrounding areas. I had an incredible time and made a lot of friends here! Hope to come back soon!

It's a very peaceful place, in a village in the Connemara region, which is absolutely beautiful. It's perfect for people who enjoy hiking and a quiet atmosphere. We usually work in the mornings and have the afternoons off, and the work itself is easygoing. The hostel is right next to Diamond Hill. The volunteers sleep in the same bedrooms as the guests.

While Letterfrack and Diamond Hill are beautiful, I had a bad experience. The first week was pretty good, however, I later found out the owners were going on vacation and were leaving us, the volunteers, in charge of everything at the hostel. This wasn't something that was previously agreed upon upon my arrival, because if I had known, I probably wouldn't have accepted. The working hours became excessively long, sometimes reaching 12 hours between cleaning and then being left in charge of waiting for guests to arrive. I was on the verge of collapse, and it didn't seem to matter.

Stephen & Silvana replied

Jorge never respected the agreed 4h/day schedule and was careless in his duties. His claim of 12h workdays is false—he did about 2h in the morning, had free time until 3pm, and check-ins were never his responsibility. The other volunteers managed fine, but Jorge refused to cooperate, undermined the female volunteer in charge, and showed immaturity. His account misrepresents reality, as confirmed by the reviews of the other two volunteers who stayed at the same time
