HOW TO BE A MEXICAN

This is not a "help at the front desk and get a free bed" position. It is a programme to learn about oru mexican way.

We are Grupo Casa Pepe. In 2017 we opened Casa Pepe in Mexico City, the first five-star boutique hostel in the country. Today we run accommodation in Mexico City and Puebla, the Ateneo de Virreyes — a historic building in the heart of the Centro that we are turning into a hotel, a cafe, a micro-theatre and a cultural space — and Sincretico, our own tour brand with scripts we wrote ourselves.

How to be a Mexican is for the traveller who has already been here a while. You have crossed the country, you have your own version of Mexico, and you are tired of explaining it one conversation at a time. Here you explain it to a room. Our guests buy "Meet at Casa": meeting someone who has lived the country and shows them their Mexico. That someone is you.

HOW IT WORKS

1. You apply at casapepe.mx/volunteer. Ten minutes: where you have travelled, how long you have been in Mexico, and ten questions about the country. There is one question with no right answer.
2. If you pass, we open an account for you in our own system and you take the tour quiz. Thirty points unlocks a tour — that tour becomes yours to guide. You also send us your workshop idea and your pub crawl game.
3. You pick your dates from our calendar. We take a maximum of four volunteers at a time.
4. You arrive. First week you shadow our guides, build your own tour and learn the ten musts of each route.

English is important to develop the program.

TO STAY LONGER

We extend month by month. To continue you unlock two more tours and hit your review and sales targets. People who work out stay months, not weeks.

Activities & Shift

25 hours a week, across 5 days, with 2 days off. A typical week:

- 2 walking tours — 10:30 to 14:00
- 1 to 2 workshops — from 17:00, 3 hours
- 1 to 2 pub crawls — power hour at 19:00, 6 hours
- 1 to 2 front desk shifts — Thursday to Sunday, 13:00 to 18:00

Your schedule is agreed in advance and it is yours. We do not move it on you the night before.

WHAT YOU CAN EARN ON TOP

- Every 3 reviews on Booking, Hostelworld or Expedia that mention you by name: one extra day off.
- Every 20 reviews on Google that mention you by name: one extra day off.
- 15% on every tour you sell.
- Your own workshop: we cap your cost at 80 pesos and sell it at 300. Two people in a day covers your shift for that day, and you keep 25% of the sale.

None of this is automatic. It is what happens when you are good at this.

Rules

- 5 hours a day, 5 days a week, 2 days off. Schedules are agreed in advance and respected on both sides.
- First week is a trial, for you as much as for us. If it is not working, we say so and you leave as a guest, not as a problem.
- You guide our routes with our content. You are welcome to make them yours, but the ten musts of each tour are not optional.
- Guests come first. Not your phone, not your friends, not last night.
- It is a hostel and you live in it. Respect for guests and for the team, and the same rules of the house as everyone else.
- You commit to your dates. If you need to leave early, one week's notice.
