Had an amazing experience volunteering in the shelter at Blue Wave the shelter Sanctuary. The team were very welcoming, Jana does an amazing job running the place. Wasana was an amazing representative who assisted with daily communications. I really enjoyed working up close with the turtles and seeing how the sanctuary takes care of them before releasing them to the wild.

It has been such a cool and unique experience working with turtles! In addition, you could contribute to saving the environment! Working hours were quite flexible and we still had enough time to travel around Sri Lanka!
Everyone has been sooo friendly and welcoming, especially our Hostfamily! They provided clean rooms, nice views from the terrace and served the best sri-lankan food ever! Damith and Wasana were always looking after us/me!
Although the fee is a little high, I‘d still recommend it!

My host family was absolutely incredible, and the accommodation is surrounded by beautiful nature. The work is quite varied, and even though there was no hatching season during my stay, I still found the hatchery maintenance interesting and enjoyable.
I wasn't there during peak season, so there were no other volunteers in my specific program, but there were always volunteers from other programs around. As a solo traveller, I never felt alone, and everyone was very welcoming and helpful.
You also have more than enough free time to explore the area and travel around the shelter:)

I enjoyed learning about the sea turtles of sri lanka, and what help they need for rehabilitation and support for a better life. Was gifted the honour of releasing some into the ocean, feeding, cleaning their living spaces, administering medication and maintaining their hygiene. Well rounded experience taking care of these beauties. The homestay family were such beautiful people that met me with genuine care and incredible meals. Wasana was a very kind hearted man who guided me through logistics and injury and showed me some gems of the town. This was a beautiful experience thank you.

I volunteered at the shelter center, and it was great! Working with the turtles was very fun and hands-on, and i only had to work in the mornings and had afternoons off. I was the only volunteer, due to it being off season, so i wad alone in my accommodation, however i still met other volunteers from other companies working at the shelter center! Everyone was extremely welcoming and friendly here, it was a great experience.

The experience was amazing - the volunteering at the hatchery was varied, interesting and rewarding. It was a real hands on experience and I learnt a lot about the turtles and the staff were all so helpful (especially Janna). I'd say we ended up doing less than 3 hours a day so just know that you'll have a lot of free time. My coordinator Wasana came to pick me up at the accom and took me to the hatchery daily and was super helpful with any questions about Galle and the hatchery too. The homestay was great, I had a private room and the family who own it were so kind and the food was amazing.

I had such an amazing time at the shelter sanctuary. It was SO incredible being up close with the turtles, caring for the injured turtles, cleaning the tanks, feeding them and releasing the baby turtles into the ocean was a real highlight. I felt very safe and looked after during my stay. Wasana the supervisor was so helpful and kind, and the team at the sanctuary were so friendly and I learned a lot from them. The accommodation host was very nice and I felt safe and secure there. It was a truly rewarding and fulfilling experience that I'll never forget! Thank you so much.
