Backpacker Hostal Oruro

Oruro is considered the folkloric capital of Bolivia; it has many tourist sites to visit, such as the Virgen del Socavón, the mining center, the volcanic hot springs, in addition to the famous Oruro Carnival, which is considered Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. Also, about 3 hours away is the majestic Sajama, Capachos hot springs and obras (artisanal workshops), as well as the Salar de Uyuni and Coipasa. We have a monument bigger than the Christ the Redeemer of Rio de Janeiro.

Currently I work in La Paz, I dedicate myself to the hostel practically alone; the hostel runs by itself. All reservations are made digitally, via WhatsApp, Airbnb, or Booking, so I send the day's reservations to the volunteer who receives them and accommodates the guest in the reserved room. When I am not there I attend to them virtually or remotely. I have security cameras in the house and also a key storage system so that the guest can open the door and settle in without problems. The hostel is small; we have rooms for each type of guest: single, group, matrimonial, and all are numbered. Since I speak English it's not a problem to communicate with them. Also on weekends the place becomes a meeting place for tourists where people from all over the world can share their travel experiences and receive recommendations. In the house we always receive volunteers so that this works, from 2 to 4 volunteers.

The volunteer work at Backpackers Oruro was calm. The working hours were fulfilled as in the advertisement. There is a work schedule that makes things a lot easier. The work is simple and Carlos and his family are super calm.
I only stayed less time than agreed due to the situation in Bolivia at the moment. The host was understanding when I told him about the situation.

My experience at Backpackers was great! Carlos and his family welcomed me with a lot of warmth and treated me with respect. The tasks are simple: cleaning and reception. We have a room for volunteers and warm blankets to protect us from the cold. The breakfast is very good. I was able to learn a bit about the local culture, meet people from different countries, and visit nearby tourist spots, such as the Conchupata Lighthouse and the Sanctuary of the Virgin of Socavón. I would highly recommend it!

I enjoyed my time at Oruro Backpackers painting murals. The whole team is very friendly. I would have liked a bit more communication between the staff and volunteers, so there would be more clarity in tasks and responsibilities. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to express myself and make art on the walls <3
