Blue Sky Lodge and farm

Our sustainable farm is part of BlueSky Lodge, nestled in the mountains of the Nicoya Peninsula, Guanacaste, in Costa Rica's Blue Zone. Here, volunteers experience authentic mountain and farm life while learning practical skills in self-sufficiency, animal care, gardening and renewable energy.

Days on the farm can include caring for our animals, milking our friendly goats, working in the gardens, helping with projects around the property, and learning how our solar energy and water systems work. It's a hands-on experience surrounded by nature, with plenty of opportunities to learn, contribute and enjoy a slower way of life away from Costa Rica's busier tourist areas.

Our goal is to share the experience of living more simply and independently while welcoming travelers into our small farm community. If you're curious, practical and enjoy nature and animals, you'll have plenty to discover here.

The farm is also home to BlueSky Lodge, our mountain vacation retreat. When the lodge isn't occupied by guests, volunteers are welcome to enjoy the infinity pool and its beautiful mountain views β€” one of our favorite places to cool off after a day on the farm.

You can see more of the property, our location and life in the mountains at https://bluesky-lodge.com.

We're a warm, welcoming Canadian family who genuinely care about creating an amazing experience for every volunteer. From the moment you arrive, you'll be greeted with a special welcome dinner where we all share stories and get to know each other. We're very attentive hosts who go out of our way to accommodate each volunteer's needs and interests - whether that's learning goals, or personal space requirements. We speak French, English and Spanish, and we like to learn your languages too!

Once in a while our evenings include fun board game sessions where laughter fills the air, and we love taking volunteers on local adventures to discover hidden gems and breathtaking spots that most tourists never see. We believe in treating our volunteers like family members, not just workers.

Our approach is all about mutual respect, open communication, and creating genuine friendships. We want you to feel supported, valued, and truly at home while learning alongside us. Many volunteers tell us they felt like they were visiting old friends rather than staying at a work exchange!

I loved my stay at the farm! It was great to experience working on a the community caring for animals. Johnathan and Sandra did their best to make us feel welcome! They were very helpful with information on how to get around on your day off. Be prepared to get dirty and grow stronger. It's hard work, but very rewarding. The boundaries and rules were agreed upon beforehand and respected! They have the cutest dog and cats ever as well.

The stay was wonderful, especially for the connection I experienced with the animals and the mountains, and it was also special thanks to Sandra and Jonatan, very kind and loving, dedicated to teaching you and to making you feel at home. I will return another time.

Sandra and Jonathan are really nice. The farm is great and the animals very cute. Be aware that you have to walk one hour and more when you want to get into town, although you always can ask Sandra and Jonathan when they ll do their grocery shopping and they give you a ride

I had an unforgettable stay, thank you Sandra and Jonathan! From the moment I arrived, they welcomed me with a lot of kindness and quickly made me feel at home. I learned so much during this experience, especially about the animals, life on the farm, and living as close to nature as possible. Taking care of the animals was one of my favourite parts, and I'm really going to miss them all. Sandra and Jonathan are lovely, caring people and are always available if you need anything. I also loved meeting the other volunteers and sharing this experience with them (Noemi, Ansgar and Ana 🫢🏻)
