I had an amazing time with the kids! They were very friendly and eager to learn English. I recommend preparing lots of engaging activities, and having at least an intermediate level of Spanish is very helpful since there's no teacher alongside you. We were teaching around 1–2 hours a day, and the rest of the time we either had free time or helped Max at the bar. Max is super welcoming and easygoing, which made the whole experience even better. We also had access to things like the scooter, paddleboards, and hammocks… The area and lake are very beautiful. Thank you for this opportunity!!

When I accepted the volunteering, the agreement was to help as a bartender and receptionist at a hostel. However, upon arrival, it was no longer operational and I ended up volunteering at a school. The children were wonderful and the human experience was valuable, but it did not correspond to what was initially agreed, and I felt that there was a lack of timely and clear communication about this change before my arrival.
Additionally, during my stay I was alone at the hostel, with no wifi or drinking water. While the place is very nice, what was presented was not what I ultimately found.

I stayed one week in El Remate and had a great time! Ricardo was always available if we had any questions, and spending time with the kids was a lovely experience. To note, the home is no longer in use so the main other task was welcoming guests when I was there. Several things to do in the area are visiting Tikal, Flores, Santa Elena, walking around the lake, swimming, going to one of the local cafès, and trying the amazing cheap tacos across the street! If you are looking for a chill break, this is definitely the place for you to relax. I would say 7-10 days is plenty :)

I had a really positive experience with Richie and his project! It's a chill volunteering where you are given a lot of freedom and your initiative is appreciated. The English classes take place in a small village 10 mjn by bus from the hostel . The kids are super sweet and some are very eager to learn! I wanted to have a break from non stop moving while backpacking and it was the perfect experience. the home hostel is calm and quiet, so don't expect loads of things happening. Instead, I would recommend it to anyone who is looking to relax, make an impact connect with locals :)!
