Hacienda Mazahua

Welcome to Hacienda Mazahua where you will get a genuine Mexico experience. We are in the heart of the valley of Mexico at 8,000ft elevation! This is no Cancun but it is rich in history and culture. The Hacienda itself was built in 1718 so in itself it is a historical building with some beautiful architecture.

If that is not enough, we are a short drive (or bus ride) from some beautiful towns such as El Oro, Tlalpujahua, and the Monarch butterfly sanctuary.

All of our staff are locals to the area. While they are all friendly, most of them do not speak great English so if you want to be immersed in a language you have found the right place. While the Hacienda is a large place, we only have about 6 full time staff with most of the other staff being brought in for events. So we are very close and usually al have lunch together.

We had a great stay at the Hacienda! Yoshi was a great host who always made sure we had everything we needed. The staff was very friendly and helpful as well. Would recommend going as a couple or with a friend as you’ll be spending time on your own. Also WiFi is not available outside the reception area so make sure to buy data or bring lots of books! :) overall really happy with my stay

Yoshi was a great host, communicative, friendly and welcoming. He made sure we had everything and helped out when we needed. The staff was really nice as well and it was great chatting with them and have a cultural exchange. They were just as helpful!
We would recommend to go with a friend or a partner hence this position requires you to be very independent and you will have to spend a lot of time on your own. Wifi is also only available in the reception so make sure you either buy a Mexican SIM card or bring lots of books!

In conclusion, we had a great time and would love to come back.

Thanks for your comments Petronella :) It was a pleasure having you and Felicia at the Hacienda. If you ever visit Mexico and you want to get away from the city you are more than welcome to come visit us again.

If you’re going to do social media here just know there won’t be much to do and you are going to spend most of your time alone. Internet is only available in certain areas, bring books to read or something!! The staff was very nice but they all had their own things to do and I really didn’t so I was alone and barely spoke to anyone all day. Also I wasn’t made aware before hand that they don’t provide food on the weekends! I managed to get some when there was extras from events though.

Hi Jorja, I am sorry if you were not really entertained here. As I try to stress to the volunteers, we are in a very remote area of Mexico, with limited internet, and no real nightlife to speak of. Unfortunately, we are also busy with work as you stated. For this reason, we do ask that volunteers take initiative and try to make the most of nature and the surrounding towns on weekends. I do wish we had had more volunteers to hang out with because that definitely affects things.

As for the meals on weekends. Normally the volunteers are not expected for those meals because they have those days off and can go into town or check out other surrounding areas. On the days where you are working (which sometimes is on weekends) of course, we offer the lunch. This is also all in the volunteer guide that I sent you.

I appreciate your honesty and also your time here!
