Hostal Gato Colonial
We are a small backpackers hostel in the heart of Santo Domingo's colonial quarter. The hostel has 18 rooms and a roof terrace with a view of the ruins of the San Francisco Monastery, the first in the Americas.
The owners/managers are two friends: Christian(Spain) and Juan Carlos (Spain). We have a rescue cat called Kiwi. We pride ourselves on supporting the community around us. We love recommending local businesses and working with our neighbours to keep the street clean and tidy.
Nearby we have the weekly Sunday "Bonye" concert - a free Merengue and Salsa concert set in the monastery ruins.
We are also a few minutes walk from all the bars, nightclubs and main sights of the Zona Colonial.
We pride ourselves on our flexibility and on helping our staff and the community around us.
We will lay out the expectations clearly (4 hours a day, 5 days a week) and provide you with some tasks we would like you to complete. We'd like to arrange a Zoom call with you before you come.
We speak Spanish and English.

Mi experiencia en el hostel fue muy buena. Definitivamente amo la ubicación y la vista que tiene hacia el Monasterio. Todo está muy cerca, se llega caminando a los lugares turísticos y a los supermercados. La Zona el hostel es una zona donde puedes caminar por la calle hasta muy tarde y divertirte bailando bachata. Pablo y Juan Carlos son muy atentos y siempre están pendientes de todo.

Pablo y Juan Carlos fueron unos anfitriones excelentes. Las tareas son simples y flexibles, y tuve la posibilidad de conocer a mucha gente amable. Además, el hostal es súper bonito y perfecto para trabajar o estudiar con el ordenador. Está en una ubicación ideal para salir, conocer la ciudad y divertirse. ¡Muchas gracias, Pablo y Juan Carlos! La próxima vez que esté en Santo Domingo, no tendré ninguna duda sobre dónde ir😉

Juan Carlos y Pablo son personas increíbles, siempre amables y atentos. Los horarios del voluntariado te permiten disfrutar muy bien de la ciudad y el hostal está ubicado en una zona segura. Los días libres se pueden juntar, lo que facilita mucho visitar el resto de la isla. Las tareas son sencillas; al principio puede parecer un poco caótico, pero en cuanto le coges el ritmo, todo se vuelve fácil. Voy a extrañar muchísimo este lugar. Me sentí como en casa y tuve la oportunidad de conocer la verdadera cultura dominicana ❤️

The hostel is a truly special place. It's home to a wonderful community of locals and travelers alike. Whether you wanna go dancing, find great places to eat, see the monuments, there's always people around do something. Work shifts go by quickly having great conversations and enjoying the vibes (e.g. bachata playing, random people saying hi when they walk by in the street, etc.). The hostel is perfectly located where you can walk to anywhere you need without needing a taxi or bus. I would recommend this place to anyone looking to have an authentic experience in Santo Domingo.

¡Sin duda repetiría! El the hostel se convirtió en un hogar para mí, me sentí tan acogido. El trato de Pablo y Juan Carlos es maravilloso, son personas increíbles que harán todo lo posible por qué te encuentres cómo en este lugar. Mil gracias chicos por esta etapa tan bonita que me habéis regalado.
