Hostel Roots

Tilburg is a very diverse, but small city. There are a lot of international students here and there is always something fun to do. We'll make sure you will feel at home - at home in Tilburg and at home in the hostel.

We are the first and only hostel in Tilburg and you can be part of this life changing experience.

You will learn all the ins- & outs of running a hostel: front- & back-office, marketing, bar, kitchen, housekeeping and much more. We host people from all over the world and although we are Dutch, the main language spoken in the hostel is English. So if you are looking to improve your English and work within an energetic, fun and genuine team which feels more like a family, then this is the best place to be! :)

We (Koen, 39 years & Marion 37 years) are a couple for over 10 years, we have 2 kids. We are from Tilburg, but we have also lived in Rotterdam, Amsterdam & The Hague. In 2016 we moved back to our roots, Tilburg to follow our dream; opening the first hostel in the city. We work in the hostel along side a small team which also includes 6 work&stayers who live in the hostel. With the work&stayers we have a small dutch team working in the reception. We all speak English with each other :) We want our hostel to feel like home and want our guests to soak up in the "world" of Tilburg. The hotspots and typical highlights from Tilburg are shown in the rooms and the building itself.

Roots was my first volunteering and how sad I am to leave. This is one of those experiences that are a mark in your life. The shifts are exactly as described and often fun, the owners, reception and interns are amazing people and I’m so grateful for them. The facilities are totally complete, the hostel feels like home the moment you step in. I’ve learned so many things, I’m a pro at pouring beer and making beds now. This place is in my heart now and although my journey continues I’ll never forget Roots and all the lovely experiences I had. Thank you so much and I hope I’ll come back one day:)

Hostel roots is more than just learn how to run a hostel, it's truly a 360 degree experience!
All the staff, starting from the owners Koen and Marion, is really cool and they were been really welcoming to me. The atmosphere you breathe is that of a large international family and Is basically impossible to get bored.
The work is really fair and if you need an extra hand you can always ask.
Tilburg Is a really nice city, everything can be reached by bycicle and if you want to improve your English Is the perfect place cause everyone speaks It.

Thanks again Roots, for everything ♥️

This was my first volunteer experience and I couldn’t recommend it enough!!! The whole team is so welcoming and kind and it really feels like a family. The work is easy to get your head around and everyone was always willing to help and answer any questions I had. The schedule is also really well organised so you always know when your shifts are and what you are doing. I loved Roots so much and miss it already 🩷

What should I say, my experience at Roots was beyond incredible. I didn't meet a single staff member that wasn't absolutely lovely, caring and kind. Even though I was "just" a volunteer, I always felt very appreciated and my ideas fully respected by Koen, Marion, Julia and the rest of the amazing front office team. The atmosphere within the volunteers and staff members is unbelievably supportive and loving, like in a little family. I never felt lonely once! I would 100% recommend it, especially for those seeking actual deep relationships whilst being abroad. All the love for Roots <3

I had a great experience with all the other volunteers, and loved our daily dinners together! We also had lunch together everyday, which was nice.

The communication and organization with the management team could've been better.

The work isn't difficult, but they expect you to work a lot during the week, so it's longer hours than many other volunteer jobs. Keep in mind that the hours are quite set, so if you have other responsibilities or jobs, it can be difficult to balance at times. We were able to find a compromise so that I could still work my remote job, which I am thankful for.

Hi Kaitlyn,
Thanks for your review! ;)

I do however think it's good to clarify for everyone that the hours are as described as in the Worldpackers, and I also explain them again during a videocall. That's why it also came as quite a surprise to hear last minute that you weren't able to work 2 out of the 3 shifts that we described! Luckily we could find a agreement that worked for both of us! Besides that, after being with us for two weeks, you texted me saying that you found an apartment and was leaving us the next week...

Glad I have the opportunity to respond to your review Kaitlyn! I wish you all the best for your future. :)

- Julia
