Human-Resource Development & Language Foundation
Our international volunteer program is currently closed due to COVID-19 travel restrictions! We expect to start taking volunteers again in February 2020.
We are a grassroots education organisation founded four years ago by a Cambodian humanitarian with many years of experience working in NGOs around South-East Asia. Our HQ is in Battambang and we have three rural learning which are run with the help of local trainees and international volunteers.
Volunteers will be matched to one of the following locations:
- Kbal Damrei (Kampong Chhnang)
- Kampong Preang (Battambang)
- Koun Khlong (Battambang)
In early 2021 we plan to start building an IT centre and library at Koun Khlong, so we will be taking a lot of volunteers for construction, fundraising and teaching English.
The aim of our organisation is to empower local grassroots humanitarians with the aims to enhance the education level of children and youth in the village. As well as teaching English and IT, we also support students to study at university and connect them to employment opportunities.
Our super scholars live and teach in the school as part of their scholarship. They are as much the beneficiaries as the students! A big part of the volunteer work will involve collaborating with them; helping them to improve their English and teaching ability, sharing skills, games and ideas.
Our community has limited amenities and outside help; the passion and enthusiasm generated by volunteers on the project greatly benefits all the students and teachers at the school. We are looking for people who have initiative to participate in our current programs or organise their own.
If you are looking for a highly structured volunteer experience with an international curriculum - this is not for you! We are a grassroots initiative run by locals from the village so we do our best within the limits of our team members ability.
On the weekends you can explore Battambang and other nearby provinces such as Pailin, Pursat, Banteay Meanchey and Siem Reap. We're only 3 hours drive from popular tourist attractions such as Angkor Wat but there is also a lot to see in Battambang. It's possible to take buses to get around but most of us prefer to use motorbikes.
We're also looking for long-term volunteers and staff (3 months minimum) who want to work with us in Battambang City, developing professional skills in fundraising, curriculum design, content creation (stories, photography, videography) and website design.
We're planning to launch a large permaculture project in the next 1-2 years, involving eco-design, tree planting and organic farming. If you have skills in this area or it's something that interests you please get in touch! :)
As a volunteer, your basic needs will be looked after and you will be staying within the grounds of the school with a local Khmer team. You will work alongside local trainees who are attending university, whilst living and teaching in the school.
Living conditions are very basic and surrounded by wildlife. You will share Cambodian style single-sex dorms with other volunteers. Mosquito nets, mattresses and fans are provided. There is a Western style sit-down toilet, Cambodian bucket shower and an area where you are able to hand-wash clothes. A variety of locally- grown organic lunches and dinners are offered on a daily basis and there is also a small kitchen area where volunteers are able to cook their own food if they wish.
If you are very introverted you may struggle because you will be sharing your space with other teachers and volunteers, and surrounded by students from Monday to Friday. Sometimes its challenging to find space during the weekdays but you will be free on the weekends to do as you wish. If you decide to stay in the school during the weekends it's usually very quiet and peaceful as most of our teachers go to university. Alternatively, many volunteers like to relax in Battambang City where there are many restaurants, cafés, bars and swimming pools.
If you are a social and flexible person you will have a lot to offer our students and trainees, who are mostly very shy, lacking in social skills and find it difficult to gather the confidence to speak to foreigners.
We value support and are amenable to individual preferences. We are a passionate team with heartfelt objectives and intentions, ready to welcome new faces that can help create a beautiful learning environment!
