Peace House Sakura

We're a lo-fi, older style guesthouse with only around 10 rooms. Right on the edge of two of the most interesting historic neighbourhoods of Kyoto! Secluded somewhat in a discreet side street, everything you could otherwise want is at a mere stone's throw away.
Our goal is to provide clean and comfortable accommodation for guests visiting Kyoto, as well as providing opportunities to do language/culture/study exchanges. The most common so far has been language exchange.
You can help us by maintaining the cleanliness of the facilities, as well as creating any improvements that will hopefully help to enhance the general atmosphere. Creative initiatives are welcome! Hours can be pretty loose and flexible - although we have a default plan of five-hour shifts four times a week. (You also get to sleep in, since business hours are from 12pm to 11pm.)
You'll therefore have plenty of time to get to know Kyoto and Kansai (nearby Osaka, Kobe, Nara etc.), and or spend time studying language or whatever other activities interest you!
We also want to greenify the place as much as possible, so if you have any gardening know-how or can-do, then we might also be the place for you :) Feel free to water the plants if you see they're dry!

We are a hostel where we want both guests and volunteers to feel comfortable being there. We want them to have a great experience in the city of Kyoto and enjoy the wonders of the surrounding area.

It's a good place... it just needs more attention, organization, and staff. And they need to organize the schedules better so that the volunteers feel more comfortable. And also respect each volunteer's rest days.

The hostel is in a great location, and I could easily walk to many places, which made it very convenient. I also really enjoyed meeting people from different countries, both guests and other volunteers, which made the experience fun and memorable.

The only downside was that sometimes there wasn't much to do because there were no check-ins, so I would end up spending most of the day without much to do. Overall, though, I had a good experience and enjoyed meeting so many different people.

I enjoyed staying here, the work was easy and other volunteers were sweet. However the host is a bit of a mysoginist. i would not feel very safe staying here alone as a woman. There were also a few cases of bedbugs, not while i was there, at least not in the dorm but it is an issue.

In general, the experience was acceptable, but the state of the hostel was very bad. The sheets smelled of dampness and some had holes. The volunteers slept in a room with four bunk beds where the paint was peeling off the walls. The cleaning was poor and there were bed bugs. Before arriving, a former volunteer had already warned us about a possible rat, and the owner even commented on it with laughter. Although he was friendly, he was very careless: he hardly helped and spent most of the day sitting without getting involved in the hostel.

I stayed during the month of June, which isn't a busy period, so the work load was quite light as there weren't many check-in/out, and we finished earlier than expected. It's good to note that this isn't always the case depending on when you would volunteer. The living room layout is rather cosy and social, bringing people around 2 low tables. There is a surprising amount of cooking utensils, though the place wasn't very clean when I arrived. The staff dorm is in the basement, which in summer makes it cooler, but it's also damper. There was an issue with the dorm at some point.
