The English School Kelaa

Life in the city is incredibly affordable, and you can find everything you may need within walking distance. Restaurants, cafés, markets and shops are found everywhere and you can expect to live very comfortably on a small budget. The community are very welcoming and friendly, and it’s not unusual to be invited into someone's home for dinner or lunch. On Fridays we usually dine at the home of Mama-malika (famous in our eyes), a lovely Moroccan lady who invites us in for a beautiful couscous meal, as is custom on prayer day. You will find this a little more laid back than the already laid back lifestyle!

We are located around an hour's drive from Marrakech, on the outskirts of the world famous Middle Atlas mountains. From here, you’ll be able to experience some of Morocco’s lesser seen beauty in a relatively short journey - the Ourika Valley, treks in both the Middle and High Atlas, Ouarzazate and the Ouzoud Falls are all available to see during time off. For long-stay volunteers (over 1 month) we can arrange a three-day trip to the desert (only the cost of the diesel is shared). Some weekends we may also visit the coast as a group and take some leisure time on the beach or explore nearby cities.

I am a high energy health conscious person who loves to hike, swim, meditate and play guitar. Me and Abdel are passionate about our school and students and we always strive to give them an exciting and fulfilling experience. We are chilled people here at the school and the staff and students are always full of smiles. Our receptionist Khadija is kind sweet person who is always looking to help you !

Luke, Abdel, the teachers and students have created something really special and inspiring here. The teaching was enjoyable and in my spare time I was shown around the city and introduced to locals who made it their mission to give me cultural experiences like trying traditional dishes, Moroccan dancing, henna, and going to a hammam! A highlight was visiting Ouzoud waterfalls on one of the volunteer day trips they have each Sunday. The accommodation had everything you needed. Although I was the only female volunteer, I was made to feel very comfortable by getting my own bedroom.

Abdel, Luke, the teachers, and staff at The English School have created something truly special. Abdel’s vision of connecting students with foreigners led to a hybrid model combining paid local teachers with volunteer sessions. I stayed at the El Kelaa location, where the school and volunteer apartment were simple but had everything needed. During my four-week stay, I worked with eager, respectful students of all ages and led fun, collaborative clubs. Sunday outings to places like Ouzoud Waterfalls added to the experience. I highly recommend volunteering here! Thank you, TES Team!

El Kelaat is full of life and the English school is full of love. To the wonderful engaged students to the staff that makes you joyful. This has been the best experience for me. I learned a new culture entirely and I also learned so much about mine. Abdel and Luke have made something that I didn’t know could be made in a community as Kelaat but everyone traveling to Morocco should experience this. Embrace the different and smile through all that you can!

I spent 2 months teaching Spanish and Italian. Some weeks more and some weeks less hours. The friendliness of the locals/students explains your heart. I took Arabic and Darija classes. If you are a woman and adapt to the street harassment and lack of water it is a light experience to insert yourself into Moroccan culture, with its 4:30 am prayers, general disorganization and gender inequality.
My trip was not for tourist purposes so I will be back soon to meet up with some very warm-hearted friends there.
