I'd dreamed of an experience like this since primary school. Thanks to Matt's excellent organisation, everything ran smoothly, and whenever I needed help, he was always ready to support me. The kind family I stayed with made me feel welcomed, understood and safe at all times. Teaching children during the seminars gave me valuable insights into their lives and helped me learn more about myself. Some situations were unexpected and challenging, but that's exactly why I came, and I left stronger, more confident and grateful. I couldn't have chosen a better first volunteering experience.

The contact before the trip was really reassuring.
Staying in the village of Yayeme was an unprecedented experience for me—I got to see what real, authentic daily life is actually like.
The whole host family was super friendly and took such great care of me. I don’t speak French, and their English was very limited, but that didn't stop us from connecting and being kind to one another.
Just a heads-up for anyone interested: accommodation in Yayeme gets extremely hot during the summer. Even with an electric fan, it doesn't help much, so just be prepared for the heat!

I was immediately welcomed into the team at the project and I felt quite at ease despite it being my first time in Africa and my not being very confident in my French-speaking.Everyone was very helpful! I had adventures suggested and/or organized for me on days off. The host family was super kind and hospitable! The room I was in was not super comfortable (it was really hot most nights—but oh well we adapt.) The kids were fun (also challenging) to work with. We did French text from the Lion King and English poetry; at the end we had a little showing! It was truly a special experience for me!

Thank you so much Danika for your kind words and your hard work. You had your hands full teaching the kids but you did great! We are so grateful.

Thanks for the advice about the room. We've given some money to Fatou to make the room a bit more comfortable for futur volunteers. You are welcome back any time!

The positives outweigh the negatives and it's all due to being able to stay with a wonderful family. They don't speak much English so I tried my basic French and they were so patient and kind. The children ( mostly teenagers) were a lot of fun and we even played UNO together 😊 .The mother cooked large, delicious, meals. The bedroom I stayed in had a nice mattress and electric fan which helped since it was hot.
This is specific to me but the contact person mistakenly told me some incorrect info ( it turned out fine) and there were some incidents with the driver that made me uncomfortable.

I stayed two weeks in Fimela, and I had a very good time. I taught (basic) French and English in the community the project, and assisted an English teacher in the local school. It was a lot of fun and I learned a lot. I was welcomed with open arms in the school, and the children were truly amazing. Further, I had a basic but nice room with the host family, and although the overall level of comfort was limited, I had an incredible stay with the family. They considered me part of the family and I am very grateful for this beautiful, authentic experience. Finally, thanks to Matt for the coordination.

We had the most wonderful time in Yayeme.
We were immediately welcomed by our lovely guestfamily whoch we already dearly miss after having left.
The volunteer work in school was as described, the kids are all wonderful and eager to learn. Even though we did not speak French we were able to teach English and some creative activities and everyone was really helpful and wonderful at school.
We would come back in a heartbeat! 🥰

My time in Fimela was much more than volunteering; it felt like joining a family. The hosts welcomed me warmly and shared their daily life and culture. The kids, full of energy and laughter, made every day special with learning, painting, dancing and games. Life in Fimela is calm and simple, close to nature and community. It's an experience that helps you slow down, value the basics and connect in a genuine way. Bring curiosity, flexibility, and an open mind, you'll learn as much as you give.

Fimela has become home. I suppose that when you volunteer in the 'educational field' the goals are: to teach, to contribute, to have an impact on the children and society at an educational level… And I am proud to say that all of that has been more than fulfilled. But without a doubt I have learned much more than I could ever teach. Fimela and its people are masters of life, in its precious simplicity. Thanks to the constant help and support of Matt and Chantal, I have felt guided and cared for at all times, by them from afar and by my dear family there.

An absolutely unforgettable experience. My volunteering in Senegal was much more than a simple stay: I had the chance to live with a local family, share their daily life, and fully immerse myself in their culture. The welcome was warm and authentic from start to finish. The organization was excellent, and Matthew was always available, attentive, and very professional, which allowed me to feel confident throughout the stay.
