The Experience

My primary role is as a staff member at a ski rental shop, where I interact with customers, maintain the cleanliness and organization of the store, and ensure the proper care and upkeep of all ski equipment. We are looking for volunteers who are positive and optimistic, with honesty being the most cherished quality we seek. We encourage open and proactive communication and kindly ask that you refrain from unilaterally venting emotions. We promise

This has been one of the best volunteering experiences I've ever had. Alan is incredible and a very good friend, always attentive and kind. the guest house is amazing and you can really enjoy skiing there. The accommodation is very comfortable. I worked as a barista, the experience was great; it was fun working and talking with the guests and customers. All the other volunteers were fantastic. It was a wonderful experience, and I hope to come back next season.

For me, this was a dream come true! Spending the winter in Japan getting to ski all the time. The work was reasonable and did not exceed agreed hours. There were continuous rule changes throughout the season leading to stricter standards. Events did take place, see other review, but communication thereafter got better. I think an SOP with outlined rules and expectations would go along way possibly eliminating many of the problems that occurred. OVERALL a great place to ski, eat and sleep with equipment for those who need.

At the beginning of the season, things were good here. In a matter of a couple weeks, things went downhill very quickly. Just to name a couple of examples, the hosts often spoke negatively about volunteers in Mandarin, which would be translated to English speakers by our Mandarin speaking coworkers. The hosts often treated us like children, one time forcing us to talk at midnight when they were upset, constantly pulled out surveillance footage of us, and the host Alan, his wife even slapped and physically attacked my coworker. Would not recommend this place as a safe work environment.

Alan replied

we didn't speak badly about you in Chinese. Second, your friend deliberately distorted what we said. And I've never talked to you like a child. about talking in middle night, did you follow our rules? Making noise in our hostel until 3 a.m. would you admit it if I showed you the footage? Why didn't you tell that your best friend called my wife a bitch ?And I didn't do bad to you.I took you to hospital when you sick, drove you to skiing every day. And I didn't give you a bad review.
