👨👩👧👦❤️ Family Support & Meaningful Exchange in Denmark
The experience
We’re an American couple who immigrated to Denmark. We have a kindergartener and a young teen.
Our daughter’s labor and delivery six years ago was unfortunately a nightmare of malpractice that resulted in her mom (Sally) having a series of strokes. You cannot tell when you first meet Sally but she’s disabled in several ways that affect her mothering.
Our biggest commitment in life is to have our kids thrive. So we seek volunteer help!

Program Details
We’re loving hosting our volunteers. They’ve been so kind and helpful and real.
Please note: we have the month of December open due to a cancellation! Christmas in Copenhagen? 🤔 🎄
We hope our volunteers will act as a combination of helper and temporary family member. We’d like you to take part in our meals, games, hikes, movies, and all kinds of silliness. We’re happy to help you strengthen English or learn some Danish (or if you speak Danish, you could strengthen ours!).
We are looking for primarily some support with our kids, who are energetic, imaginative, usually kind, and occasionally wild. They both have energy to burn and love to learn. And otherwise, we’d just like help with day-to-day chores.
Our daughter is often focused on creating art and crafts or engaging in imaginative play. She has a fun sense of style. She is very emotionally sensitive and communicates beyond what we’d expect for her age. She will be thrilled if we have a volunteer who will jump on the trampoline with her.
Our son is super energetic and always wants to converse. He is very serious about playing football (soccer). He also coaches younger kids. At this age, he’s very into fast cars, music, and various creatures: he has an ant farm, often brings in caterpillars to protect, etc.
We live just outside Copenhagen, with our house adjacent to parkland that is 1/3 of the island, and a few km from the airport. The bus stop from our neighborhood takes you into the city in 15 minutes (our son will teach you the transit if you’d like). So in times away from volunteering, it’s easy to get into the city. We also have many kilometers of parkland trails that run through the forest and by the bay next to our house.
We have two sweetheart pets, a spaniel named Theo and a cat named Luna.
Activities & Shift
5 days on, 2 days off
Volunteers are typically off on Mondays and Wednesdays, but we can move a day if there’s something a volunteer wants to attend.
If the kids are in school: help Dan get the kids ready at 6:30, if he needs it (ask him the night before). 30-60 minutes of morning cleaning or kid prep or food prep (there’s a daily chore request you’ll get in the volunteer info before you come), followed by free time to explore or hang out until the kids are home in the afternoon (usually 3 or 4 p.m.). Then being with one or both of them for activities, and/or helping prepare food, pick up, etc. into the evening. Maybe occasionally running an errand. Late afternoons and evenings are the weekday time we most need help with the kids. Volunteers also clean up the kitchen together with our son after dinner.
If it’s a school break and the kids are on holiday on weekdays: weekday daytime help with kids and housework and overall life for 5-7 hours, four days per week, then off for three days.
On weekends, either taking one of the kids on some kind of outing or joining us in a family activity for 5-6 hours. We like for volunteers to engage proactively with the kids and figure out ideas of what to do together at home or out. If there’s an idea that costs money, just check with us to make sure it’s in that month’s budget for us to cover it (for both of you) before bringing it up with the child.
You’ve got a small private bedroom (all bedrooms are small here) with a double bed, a dresser, and a chair–unless we go camping or stay in a cabin or whatever for a mini-holiday, when there might be a shared tent, etc.
One curse of Copenhagen is that most homes have just one bathroom, and ours is no exception!
Rules
Communication is key. We are kind people. Tell us what’s up if something feels off or is not working for you. Tell us if there’s something you love and want more of. We’ll do the same.
No smoking, not even in the yard or out on the town or whatever. Asthma in the family.
Reasonable limits on alcohol consumption (i.e., don’t drink like a stereotypical Dane 😬) and no illicit drug use (which includes mj in Denmark).
Guests over only after a discussion in advance, and no sudden overnight guests.
Dan (husband) keeps gluten-free, so we can do that for you with advance notice, and we make efforts to minimize cross-contamination (not reusing a butter knife after it touches gluten-y bread, for example), but the whole kitchen is not gf.
We were once vegetarian but we’re omnivorous these days. So we can accommodate vegetarians if you let us know in advance, and if us eating meat won’t offend you. We can usually work with whatever food restrictions you might follow if we have notice.
Please note that there are occasionally times we accept volunteers for as short as a 10-day stay, but we prefer volunteers stay three or more weeks so that there are fewer adjustments between people for our kids.
