Program Details
PLH Sanuki is a community hub inside a beautifully renovated elementary school in rural Kagawa, Japan, a few minutes from the Seto Inland Sea. We run English classes for local kids and adults, community festivals, business events, AI management bootcamps and residential student camps. The general manager, Lucce, is here every day and the team is a small international group. READ THIS FIRST: THIS PAID ROLE IS FOR WORKING HOLIDAY VISA HOLDERS ONLY. You sign a working holiday employment contract with us and you are paid the current Kagawa Prefecture minimum wage for every hour you work, revised each October. Your hours are contracted and recorded, you have two full days off every week, and you are covered by workers' accident insurance and employment insurance. You are staff here, with a role and a schedule. Your room is free. You live in our staff housing a short distance from the school, the company pays the utilities, and the room is not tied to your hours or your performance. Nothing is deducted from your wages for it. Two things are optional and yours to take or skip: a meal plan covering lunch and dinner, and out-of-hours access to the PLH site, which includes some hours in the company car each month. Breakfast is everyone's own. Bikes are included in the site membership, or can be added as a rental. We go through every actual figure with you on a video call before you commit to anything. Nobody can be employed or paid in Japan on a tourist visa, so this paid role needs a working holiday visa, and we cannot sponsor one. On a tourist visa we host a cultural exchange instead, not a job and with no hours or duties. Say so when you apply.
Activities & Shift
Events are the core of the week. You help plan them, set them up, run them and pack them down: community gatherings, monthly socials, seasonal festivals, the AI management bootcamps, and our residential camps for Japanese students. You welcome people at the door, you keep the day moving, and you capture it in photos and video if that is something you enjoy. Social media, music and creative ideas are all welcome, and there is room to own a piece of it.
Cooking is part of this role and it is working time like any other. The kitchen serves lunch and dinner, the shifts are split across the staff team and named on the rota, and your kitchen hours are recorded. It is not a favour and it is not extra.
Between events you help the site run: cleaning and housekeeping around the school and the guest rooms, welcoming visitors, and the general work of keeping a big old building going. Quiet weeks are steady and calm. Event weeks and camp weeks are busy and very social. You will know the neighbourhood quickly, because the neighbourhood comes to us.
Rules
You must already hold a working holiday visa for Japan, valid for the length of the contract, and we cannot sponsor a visa. A tourist visa cannot be employed or paid in Japan, so it does not work for this role, but we do host tourist-visa travellers on a separate cultural exchange. Tell us if that is you and we will explain how that one works. Fluent English is essential. Japanese at any level is a bonus, and you will pick up a lot either way, because very few people in this area speak English. Ages 18 to 50. Travel insurance for your stay is required. Cooking, cleaning and housekeeping are part of the role alongside events. If that is not what you want, this is the wrong role and we would rather you knew now. Basic physical ability is required: standing, setup, light lifting. Respect for local culture, community members and shared spaces is essential, and safety instructions are followed at all times. No alcohol during working hours. Bring initiative. If you see a problem, fix it or tell someone.
