Program Details

Villa ADAP is a recovery, shelter and rehabilitation center for abandoned animals located in an old manor house surrounded by nature. Maintaining and improving all its spaces is also part of the well-being of the animals that live here.

This position is designed for practical, resourceful people with experience performing small maintenance, DIY, or conditioning tasks. We do not seek professionals nor do we expect you to know how to do everything, but you should be used to working with your hands, using basic tools and handling tasks autonomously.

During your stay you will help us with those small improvements that a shelter constantly needs: conditioning patios and spaces, small repairs, painting, fences, nets, furniture, garden, exteriors, firewood and other needs that may arise.

ADAP is run entirely by volunteers. On Mondays and Thursdays you will usually coincide with one of our local volunteers in charge of many of the shelter's repairs and improvements. You will be able to work together, set priorities and leave prepared tasks that you can continue autonomously for the rest of the days.

The tasks will change according to the moment's needs, so we especially value initiative, organizational ability and the ability to find solutions, but also knowing when to ask when something is outside your knowledge.

We are not simply looking for extra hands: we are looking for someone who wants to help us care for and improve the place which, for our animals, is their home while they wait to find a family.

Activities & Shift

The collaboration is 5 hours per day, 5 days a week, with 2 days off.

We usually organize the day into two shifts of approximately 2.5 hours in the morning and 2.5 hours in the afternoon. However, due to the type of tasks of this position, some days we may agree to perform the 5 hours intensively, especially when it is more practical to develop a concrete improvement.

The tasks will vary according to the shelter's needs and the projects we have underway. Some may include:

• Install privacy nets in the dogs' spaces.
• Repair small damages or holes in fences.
• Paint and refresh spaces.
• Make small repairs to furniture.
• Remove weeds from patios and outdoor areas.
• Prepare the garden and help to prepare and plant.
• Collect and organize firewood for the winter.
• Organize and condition storerooms and work zones.
• Help with other small repairs and day-to-day improvements.

Mondays and Thursdays you will usually coincide with one of our local volunteers in charge of the repairs and improvements of Villa ADAP. You will be able to work together, resolve doubts and organize the tasks that you can continue autonomously.

You will not perform all these activities every day. Priorities change according to the time of year, weather and the shelter's needs. We aim that every week we can progress on those small improvements that make Villa ADAP safer, more functional and pleasant for the animals and the people who make up the shelter.

Rules

We are looking for responsible, autonomous, careful people with initiative, also capable of recognizing when a task is beyond their knowledge and asking before carrying it out.

Safety is a priority. You may only use pre-authorized tools. You will not use chainsaws, brush cutters or other machinery that we consider risky, even if you have experience.

Any repair that affects the safety of the animals—fences, gates or enclosures—must be consulted in advance. You will also not perform electrical or structural work or work for which you do not have knowledge.

ADAP is run entirely by volunteers and those in charge are not physically at the shelter all day. You will have guidance and support, but we seek autonomy to continue the agreed tasks.

Daily communication is mainly in Spanish, so you must understand instructions and communicate any incident or doubt.

Villa ADAP is in a natural setting, 2.5 km from Sant MartĂ Sarroca. The nearest bus stop is about a 20-minute walk away. We try to facilitate transport when we can, but we cannot guarantee it.

You will share accommodation and common spaces with other volunteers. We expect respect, good coexistence, and collaboration to keep them clean and orderly.

If you have any doubt, always ask. We value prudence more than attempting a repair that could pose a risk.
