The Experience

We're looking for a practical, autonomous, and handy person to help us care for and improve Villa ADAP's spaces. Installing shade nets, repairing small defects in fences and furniture, painting, preparing patios and the orchard, removing weeds, preparing spaces, or collecting and organizing firewood will be among the tasks. You don't need to be a professional, but you should have experience with basic tools and enjoy working with your hands.

The workload is intense and longer than advertised - realistically 7+h spread across the day, including evening meds at 9pm and extra chores expected to be done on your free time. No one is living at or managing the shelter on a daily basis, so the animals’ wellbeing relies heavily on WPs being present 24/7. Owners/admins rarely appear (= poor training). Communication is only via WhatsApp, which causes issues. There is no heating in the dorm, and all bikes have problems (to get groceries). There is no doubt the people truly care about the animals, but WPs experience could be greatly improved.

Volunteering at the shelter was a brilliant experience. You get to spend as much quality time with the dogs and cats as you want, the hosts are very inviting and provide you with so much stuff to stay comfortable like plenty of pillows and blankets for the bed and even clothes to wear so that you don't have to worry about any of the dogs messing up the clothes you bring with you. I really learned a lot about properly caring for animals and you can tell that all the people who help out at the shelter are super committed to providing the best care for the animals there.

The shelter was amazing! I met people from all over the world, improved my Spanish, and fell even more in love with the animal cause. I felt that there was a lack of organization in the day-to-day operations, as there wasn't a direct person in charge to guide us. Otherwise, I can't complain, because it changed my life forever!

ADAP replied

Hi Giselle,

Thank you very much for your time and for your feedback. At ADAP, everything is managed by volunteers, who balance the shelter with their jobs and families, so we can't have someone present all day. That's why we use WhatsApp groups to maintain agile communication with the Worldpackers.

We greatly appreciate your comments and we always try to improve for our furry friends.
Thank you again!

I had a really great time at the shelter with the sweet animals and amazing volunteers! This experience is surrounded by nature and a little off the grid, which was great for me! Everyone is kind and you can tell they really care for the animals there ❤️ Thank you all!
