This is not a traditional volunteer position — it’s an immersive family sailing experience. ⛵🌊
We are a French–South African family of four, with a 3-year-old daughter and a baby, living aboard our sailing boat. We are currently sailing from Rome towards Greece, spending most days at sea or anchored in beautiful places along the way.
We are looking for someone who wants to temporarily become part of our family and little crew. We live, sail, explore, cook and eat together. We often anchor rather than stay in marinas, so going ashore usually means taking the tender together.
You will mostly, be expected to look after our daughter. Mum is usually present and your role is mainly to be an extra pair of hands and bring some extra energy, creativity and companionship into our family life.
No sailing experience is required. If you’re interested, you can also learn and participate in life aboard and sailing with us.
We are looking for someone who sees this as a genuine cultural and human exchange rather than simply free transportation through the Mediterranean. 💛
Activities & Shift
There are no traditional fixed shifts aboard.
Sailing depends on the wind, weather, anchorages and our children’s rhythm, so every day can look different. The 25 hours listed are an average of active help throughout the week rather than fixed working hours.
Help include playing and doing activities with our 3-year-old, helping with the children while we are together, preparing or cleaning up after meals, keeping the children’s/shared spaces tidy and lending a hand with everyday boat life.
Our daughter is energetic, independent and loves being outside, swimming, climbing, painting, cooking and exploring. Someone creative who genuinely enjoys engaging with children will fit beautifully into our family.
Some sailing days may be long, but simply being aboard with us does NOT mean you are working all day. Likewise, spending time together, eating together or exploring together is part of our shared experience, not “working hours.”
Days off are flexible rather than fixed. While we are on passage, we may be at sea or anchored somewhere without independent access to shore. Once we reach Greece and spend longer periods in individual places, completely independent days off will be much easier to organise.
Communication and flexibility on both sides are essential.
Rules
We want someone who genuinely wants to become part of our family during their stay — someone present, flexible, proactive and happy to share life together rather than constantly counting hours or waiting to leave the boat.
We are a strong Christian family. You absolutely do not need to share our faith, but you must be open-minded and respectful of it and of the values we teach our children.
Our children learn enormously from the adults around them, so being a positive example matters to us: kindness, respect, patience, gratitude, caring for others and caring for our environment.
We have a calm, family-oriented lifestyle. No drugs, smoking or heavy partying.
Living on a boat also means living in a small shared space. Everyone is expected to clean up after themselves and after activities with the children, respect the boat and help keep our shared environment pleasant.
Most importantly: come with flexibility, curiosity and a sense of adventure. Boat life rarely goes exactly according to plan! ⛵
