The Experience

We run a small hostel & pub located in a town called Hiwasa, in South-Eastern Tokushima Prefecture. We are looking for volunteers to help us with cleaning and bed-making at the hostel. In return, we will provide free accommodation and 2 meals on your working days (breakfast, lunch), and insight into what it's like to live in rural Japan. We love cultural exchange, so let's share some stories with each other!

I had a great time at the hostel for the entire month of July. Erika-san and Umi-san are very kind and it was a pleasure helping them out with the hostel. Hiwasa is beautiful and there is a lot to explore and enjoy if you like nature. I had the opportunity to meet lovely people and experience the summer matsuri, gyoza classes, japanese classes, beach swimming and more ! I recommend this place if you like peaceful surroundings and want to meet locals. Natto chan the cat was also adorable. The work is easy and it gives you plenty of time to explore and relax afterwards! Thank you the hostel !!

The hostel is a great place & I really enjoyed staying 6 weeks in this dreamy town! Erica & Umi were lovely hosts who always had an open ear and were always fun to be around with! Natto-chan (the house cat) is also super chill. Erica's lunches & Umi's drinks at the pub are a real treat - so don't miss out! The work load is very manageable & the tasks are clearly communicated:) Although Hiwasa is rather small, there's lots of things to do - surfing, hiking, swimming in the river, free Japanese classes etc.! On rainy days the hostel offers a chill space to read, watch tv or play games!:)

I loved my time in Ichi the hostel! The place is super clean and cozy, in other words, perfect. Erika-San and Umi-san are lovely, kind and fun people. always willing to help and trying to give you the best experience possible. Food is just amazing and Hiwasa is a very charming town with sweet local people and beautiful nature. There are a lot of things to do around if you’re willing to get out there. I would come again and again if I could! I’ll miss my time here for sure.
Thank you guys for everything!!
