Jose was a great host! Private room was nice and meals were provided. Was fun to be able to help with the host and content. It's outside of the city center so a bit harder to socialize with other travelers than it would be at a hostel or something, but I still had a good time! He was also flexible if I wanted to do another activity or stay in town for a night.

While I tried the host, my experience was deeply disrespected. Unpaid Hours & Meals: I worked 10 hours on day one (dismissed as a "visit") with no food provided. Meals were consistently skipped or delayed. Restricted Freedom: No house key was provided, leaving me locked outside until midnight once. Lunch money was withheld to keep me indoors. Disrespect: Asking politely about checkout got me abruptly kicked out. The host also made derogatory remarks with his family about my nationality in Spanish. I cannot recommend this host.

Jose replied

We cannot recommend this volunteer. He arrived before the agreed date and we welcomed him as a courtesy. However, he showed no interest in working or collaborating with the project; even his main task (keeping the equipment organized) he refused to perform. He only used the house services (food, showers, laundry and internet) without contributing any help, his cooperation was so bad that the whole team had to tell him to leave. You are really a very annoying and lazy person.

I absolutely loved working for the host, so sad to be leaving! Getting to be out in the Chili river every day taking photos was so beautiful and the team were really great to work with. Jose is super lovely and makes you feel safe and at home in Arequipa, whether that was during the work days or afterwards exploring the town. It felt like having a personal tour guide so we spent lots of time meeting his friends, attending hostel parties and getting access to discounted the host around Arequipa. My Spanish has improved massively during this time. Thank you for such an unforgettable experience!

José is really nice and wants you to feel good during your stay there. But to be honest, it is a bit dirty there. So I didn't want to use the kitchen there, which is also fine cause food is mostly included and also quite cheap here to buy. Sometimes it is also a bit stressful when there are many the host & I had to work more than 15h per week (actually never really knew when I was supposed to help and when not). But I liked the work, so it was fine. Also my free days where mostly very spontaneously. Which can also be nice if you want to do something a specific day, he usually can make it happen.

Jose is a very active, adventurous and open minded person. Jose invites you into his hobbies, circle of friends and way of life. I painted some murals for his space and in exchange got to go in the river. Water the host is an intense and unique experience and the guides are well trained and make you feel safe. While I was there, half way through the river was closed to water rafters so that made it complicated going to the water. Alea , the trainee water the host guide was very helpful in explaining to me how everything worked at the host. We also did lots of salsa dancing classes!

The most fun volunteering experience I've ever had!! Arequipa is a beautiful city, the Chili River is incredible, the climate and nature are spectacular. I had a room all to myself, so I was suuuper comfortable. José is very friendly and attentive, all the guides were amazing, they let me participate in everything and learn! It was a great experience, thank you so much 🫶🏻

I had a very good time at the host, creating videos for their social networks, so I was often outside filming and taking photos along the river. I was able to work with the host alongside the guides who are adorable, it was really cool. The room was super comfortable; I felt really good. José left me very independent in the tasks to do, so I managed my time as I wanted. Nevertheless, if you need clear guidelines, the work is indeed very free and it works well if you are proactive and independent!

I had a great volunteering experience at the host; I was very well received from the first day by the host José and by the team. José is a great host who cares about making the volunteer experience great. Regarding the work; I loved going to the Rio Chili to film videos, the river is beautiful and has incredible landscapes, and I also had the opportunity to make the host and it was amazing; the guides are great and professional. In addition I had the opportunity to make the company's logo, which was something very interesting for me. I loved my time at the host, thank you for everything, José and your team.
