My experience like one of my coworkers there said was definitely more positive than negative , the work was fun and if you like the host you'll have a great time translating the classes and sometimes if there isn't that many students helping cook during the class, the work itself I really enjoyed it , but there was some things that made me feel uncomfortable sometimes ,when I got there no one really explained much , the other volunteers helped me get around , we had a small kitchen with not enough utensils to cook, sometimes drama at the time of providing meals which made us feel uncomfortable

Such an amazing experience! It was a good way to practice my Spanish and the chefs were so much fun! The tasks would be to translate the cookingclasses, cleaning and getting everything ready for the class.
Organisation wise it was a bit hectic sometimes so that could improve, but other than that… this was an experience that I will keep in my heart forever! Thank you 🤍

Thank you so much, Anouk, for your kindness. It was a pleasure meeting you and having you with us. You were a great support to us. Wishing you a wonderful trip! ❤️

The work basically consists of translating the host class from Spanish to English cause the cookers don't speak English. You also need to help with whatever is needed during the class and wash a lot of dishes, really, a lot. One of the cookers is helpful but the other doesn't help at all. I think my experience would have been much more enjoyable if she hadn't been so grumpy and had helped more at the end of the class. The listing also says that lunch is included but halfway through my volunteer stay they changed it to breakfast which consists of only 2 eggs and a small portion of beans.

You help clean, translate, and learn Guatemalan the host. Staff is wonderful!! They could improve on the free meal. It's mostly pepian from class. It's delicious! BUT it's not nice to eat every. single. day… The hostel kitchen is horrible. Badly equipped, no light, and many things you are not allowed to use since they have a restaurant there, and the restaurant staff need their space when working, but it just makes you feel unwelcomed in the kitchen. The place is improving now, so I think It's gonna be better in the future!! Overall this volunteer was fun, but some things lacked organization.

I arrived and was on the schedule for 7 days after the 5th I left because the hostel room was fumigated for termites which prompted all of us volunteers to be removed from the dorm. I was working that evening and was not allowed to leave even though it was almost an hour later that we were supposed to be released. The chefs are great, but lacks communication and proper facility.

The work itself is great, the cooks are amazing people who im so glad I got to know! The hours usually go a bit over the agreed amount but it's not such a big deal because it's mostly quite enjoyable. The main issues are the lack of communication and the dorm/kitchen. When we got to the hostel no body told us where anything was or what was going on. The kitchen is not at all fully equipped, there are very few utensils to use and everything will probably be dirty because the permanent volunteer doesn't clean up and he is so inconsiderate at night in the dorm room. He also might steal stuff

My girlfriend and I stayed for 2 weeks and we loved our experience at the host so much! Cindy and Betty (the chefs) were so sweet and we ended up being great friends with both of them! We didn't get any information about the hostel, the work, or where anything was when we arrived. There was a lack communication the entire time. You stay in a 10 bed dormroom with 3 lockers. A permanent resident also stays in the dorm, he often came in late and was very loud. He has stolen things from other volenteers, ate our food from the fridge, and left dirty dishes. The kitchen is unequipped and dirty.

I really enjoyed my time volunteering at the host. I loved working closely with the staff. A special thank you to Cindy and Beatrice, who taught me so much about the culture and the host. I'm really grateful for my time there. That said, the accommodations could be improved. Dinner isn't provided every night as listed. It's only included if you're working a class that day. The shared kitchen also wasn't very accessible or welcoming, making it hard to cook your own meals. Overall, great experience, but clearer communication and better kitchen access would improve it.

The chefs and other volunteers were lovely and i really enjoyed translating and the host classes. that being said communication was extremely poor and i was met with passive aggression on multiple occasions when the fault they at their end which made me feel unwelcome. the whole experience was very impersonable and i didn't feel like my time as a volunteer was valued. on my last night the hostel was fully booked and us volunteers were kicked out. i came back to find all my stuff outside my room with no warning and we were treated like an inconvenience.

Volunteering at the host was one of the best things I did in Guatemala. Pam, Bea and Cindy are amazing people and I loved collaborating with them. I also felt welcomed and my help felt appreciated. It was awesome to learn about the Guatemalan (food) culture. When there wasn't any class, we sometimes cooked together with I loveddddd so much! Would recommend to any food and culture lover!!
