The Experience

It's an opportunity to live like a local, help with real farm tasks related to horses, practice a lot of Spanish, and join the daily life of a Colombian family. I stayed with the Zapata Family for one Week and it was a wonderful experience! Unfortunaley, I got sick during my stay but still felt incredibly comfortable and well cared for because they looked after me with such kindness :)
Working with the horses brought me so much peace and tranquility, exactly what i had been looking for! Cooking together and spending time with the family made the Experience even more special.
I really recommend this place to anyone looking for an authentic and peaceful experience.
Muchísimas gracias a Juan Camilo y Don Alirio Zapata :)!

Lovely experience! House is comfortable, food delicious, family and animals amazing. Good 2 know: We didn't really have a “free” day but most days we only helped from 7:30-9am/ help was optional. The work is super easy and doable without horse experience. If you have experience, you'll be able to do more. We got dinner every night but it's small, so i recommend to bring snacks. The fee does not include all expenses, you have to pay 5$ for laundry and for some of the food/ drinks, which wasn't really communicated before. The ATM in Tenjo charges a lot, ask beforehand about payment. Thank you!

Juan Camilo replied

Thanks for your comment, Carla. For future volunteers, information about how time and meals are organized is shared several times from the start; each person organizes their free time by letting us know in advance which day they want to rest and, as is normal, if you decide to eat out, everyone pays for what they consume. Also, on family outings you were not charged anything, nor for snacks inside the house. Payment method: we offer several options but we do not know the international fees.

An incredible experience! The Zapata family is warm and welcoming, making you feel at home right away. The food is delicious, house is comfy. Juan and his family go above and beyond to ensure volunteers are happy. The work is simple, feeding horses, cleaning stalls, and watching the mares in the pasture with chances to assist during vet visits. You might have the chance to ride as well. I learned a lot, and the schedule offers a good balance of work and free time. In Tenjo, you can also enjoy local outings and hikes. I highly recommend to take the initiative to help out as much as possible.

If you are looking for a true experience with Colombians and you love animals, you will be in the right place ! The farm is nice and the family lovely ! I learned some Colombian dishes with Pilar which are so good and learned how to take care of horses with Adilio. Even if I am not the best in Spanish, I shared moments with Juan's family and I feel really welcoming. Tenjo is town where you can find anything that you need. The climate is perfect, warm with the sun but fresh during the night. If you like hiking, yo will find some trails in the surrounding. Was a pleasure to be here ! ☺️
