A Sunflower Stop Backpackers

We are a small hostel where volunteers can interact with our guests on a more personal level. We have been here for just over 2 decades, growing the family of our return guests from all over the world. Big enough for a vibe, small enough to care.

We started A Sunflower Stop from scratch over 20 years ago. Our staff and guests are our extended family. Volunteers will become one of the family, working at our bar or tending to our Housekeeping. Filter coffee, laundry and unlimited Wi-Fi are all included.

If any hostel lives up to its 'home away from home' slogan, it's the hostel. I spent eight wonderful weeks working behind the bar, and felt welcomed from the moment I arrived. The work is quite manageable, and if things got busy, there was always someone on hand to help. Also the shifts are generally very enjoyable, as you get to meet people from all around the world and socialise with them over a drink or a game of cards. I would like to say a big thank you to Sydney, Sim and Augusto, as well as my fellow volunteers Hans, Nádia, Moni and Rahel, for an incredible time. See you again!

I spent an incredible five weeks behind the bar at the hostel. From my very first day, I was welcomed with open arms, and from there, friendships grew with both the team and the guests. Especially during the winter months, the work is relaxed and you get to have a really good time with the guests — playing cards, having conversations, or enjoying the weekly braai together. The team feels like a family, and you're made to feel at home from the very beginning -it really is a home far from home. Big shoutout to all my homies Augusto, Hans, Sydney and Sim — thank you for these unforgettable weeks!

The hostel is a perfect spot if you are looking for a nice, central location and a way to meet lots of different kinds of people. Being able to walk to the ocean within 10 minutes was a huge plus. I loved getting to know the regulars that stayed at the hostel and develop real friendships with many of them that I will take with me beyond the hostel. Working the bar was manageable and chill and it's easy if you have ever worked service jobs before. The trickiest part was doing cash-up the next morning because they use a written paper system rather than a digitized one so it can take a long time.

I spent two incredible months working at the bar of this hostel and would do it again without hesitation. I was welcomed like part of the family, the atmosphere is friendly, and the team is amazing. It's the perfect place to meet locals and travelers from all over the world. I came to improve my English and made huge progress thanks to the daily conversations. A truly enriching experience that I highly recommend! 😁

This is a true gem in Capetown. Defiantly a home away from home. Work is easy and fun. Shout out to all the staff, Sid, Augusto and Sim. And big thanks to my volunteer partners, Alina and Carolie. For sure will be back. Catch ya on the flipside. Until next time.
