This was my first Worldpackers trip and my first time in the Philippines. Toto is no expert, but he has learned a lot about agroforestry, bamboo, etc., and is a good teacher. Overall, he was pretty accommodating and flexible with hours. I did not enjoy how he spoke to/about some of the local provincial people, as well as his mom, despite them being some of the best parts of my trip. The word "Filipino" was sometimes thrown around to maybe jab at one's work ethic or lack of rule-following. I would recommend this trip to someone who cares about sustainability and has a partner to travel with.

Contributing to Toto's farming/forest project was an intense and interesting experience! Be prepared for hard but fair work and amazing meals to recharge thanks to Mama Gloria. The non touristic village environment is welcoming, nice to hang out and socialise. No luxury place, but Toto's warm family will go above and beyond to provide a comfortable stay. Take into account that the (work) planning might be chaotic/ad hoc, which impacted my personal time especially during my first week. Tools/safety gear are a bit worn down.

Our time at Toto's farm was filled with new experiences and long-lasting memories. The work on the land was challenging, but a great opportunity to learn about carpentry, building, sustainable materials, and teamwork. Toto is a great teacher and always wants to share his skills and knowledge. Toto and his parents are welcoming and hospitable, and Mama Gloria's cooking is superb! Toto is very intentional about making his guests feel comfortable, and introduced us with open arms into his community outside of the farm. He's very open to feedback and wants everyone to have a good time!

Very difficult to describe how wonderful my 2 weeks here with Toto were, his amazing friends, adorable parents, the local community & school kids, and his new puppies! I realize "life-changing" seems overly dramatic, but for ME, it was! The work was very physically demanding for sure, but just what I needed. Learned SO much about permaculture, cultivating/harvesting bamboo, farming sustainability & how connecting w/the locals & the village children are critical to improving our future! Toto is one of a kind, so intelligent, caring, and committed to his vision of a better planet!!

I spent 3 weeks volunteering at Algersans in Escalantera, San Joaquin, Iloilo, and it was genuinely rewarding. The technical work was exactly as agreed, sometimes tough but meaningful, and always fairly managed at 22 hrs/week with real flexibility. We cleared and treated bamboo, turning waste into charcoal for the garden. I had a private room, ate amazing home-cooked meals cooked by mama gloria, and lived mostly off-grid (rooftop WiFi, little signal). With 3 full days off, I explored beaches, towns + fiestas. A peaceful, hands-on experience with real local connection.
