Breckenhill

If you like a relatively quiet life, in the countryside, living with a couple, their pets and maybe one or two other volunteers, this place is for you. We have a business here, doing weddings and outdoor activities, and it is not always quiet! This means there is much variety, but also plenty of work to do to prepare and to look after our beautiful grounds. You have a room in the house and will be asked to help with general household jobs like washing up, and meal preparation, like part of the family!

The volunteers will become part of our small group of staff. You need to be flexible, and also quite strong as the work is quite physical. Otherwise, you are part of the family, you will eat in the house with us, and share in our daily lives. We will take you to a bus or train for days off, so you can travel around the country. We do prefer you to take at least one of the days off as a day away - it is good for all of us, and there is plenty to do nearby! We have staff who are here most weeks, and many others who come for our events, so you will meet lots of other people, and see all kinds of different events and activities.

My stay was difficult due to several critical issues. The location is extremely isolated with no public transport; you are entirely dependent on the host for mobility, which severely limits your freedom.
The workload is physically demanding, yet the food provided is very basic and insufficient for the level of effort required. Furthermore, the environment was not always respectful; I experienced harsh communication and shouting over simple misunderstandings. Despite my best efforts to contribute, I did not feel supported.

We do make it clear on our profile that we do not have local public transport. We are happy to take volunteers to a bus on days off. Yesenia went out on 2 days during the time she was here and spent the other 2 resting. Our food always gets high praise from volunteers (we have had over 180 in 10 years) and no one has ever criticised it! The only time I raised my voice was when she was late for the lift to the bus and I’d to call upstairs. She didn’t communicate well generally.

The host was a great place for me to start worldpacking in Ireland, I stayed almost two months but it felt much shorter. Henrietta and David made sure I tried différent tasks so I wouldnt get bordel and I had plenty of free time the evenings and weekends. Wé also played games every night and thanks to many conversations I really feel liké my English had improved. All the employées are really Nice too and were always happy to help whenever I had à question. The place is beautiful and I would récomend to anyone :)

I had an amazing experience with Hen and David! They're both fantastic cooks and super easy to get along with. We had a lot of fun playing board games at night, always full of laughs! The place is lovely and has such a peaceful, relaxing vibe that you won't miss a crowded and noisy city for a second, even though it's still close by. Overall, a great environment to be in. Thanks again for everything, Hen and David❤️❤️!
