Burntwood

We live in a beautiful part of Cornwall surrounded by woods and close to Bodmin Moor. We host individuals, couples and two friends travelling together usually for 2 weeks each month. Activities at the property include gardening; collecting, splitting and stacking logs; woodland clearing; pond maintenance; bramble clearing; house cleaning and possibly help with film making. There is no average day, volunteers can select from the jobs that need doing. Breakfast is usually home made cereal, toast from home made bread and tea or coffee. My wife is vegetarian so lunch is vegetarian, she does not eat in the evening so the evening meal sometimes includes meat. We have a spare room with 2 single beds and they can be joined to make a large double bed. There are many walks locally, particularly on Bodmin Moor. We go swimming in the sea at Portwrinkle.

My wife and I live at the property and we have one cat. On an annual basis we rear 2 pigs. I am a retired Professor of film, have worked commercially directing TV ads and made film installations and many short, experimental films. My films can be seen on my website www.tonyhillfilms.com. I enjoy cooking, so all food is cooked from fresh ingredients. My wife is a retired teacher and most recently was teaching English to foreign students. She has been diagnosed with dementia but this is mild at the moment with only short term memory issues. We have happily hosted many volunteers over the last 17 years. We try to live as sustainably as possible and our Ecohouse performs well. Part of the house is rented for holiday accommodation on AirBnB. The house was Highly Commended for Sustainability in the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors SW Awards 2010 and shortlisted for the Cornwall Sustainability Awards

Tony and Pat are amazing people; they made us feel right at home from day one. The tasks are quite varied, and working hours are strictly respected. The place is beautiful and peaceful, and we were able to learn more about environmental conservation. Tony is a great cook, and we had a lot of fun with them. I am so grateful for the time we spent together and the conversations we shared.

Volunteering at the project was a wonderful experience. It all starts with the place it self, which feels like an enchanted Paradise, sorrounded by nature and tranquility. Tony and Pat's hospitality is second to none. They are incredible hosts and very interesting people. We really enjoyed spending time with them, and it was easy to sit and chat for hours. The work mainly involves helping with the care and maintenance of the property. The agreed working hours are respected and the tasks are fair and Well organized. I would definitely recommend this volunteering oppottunity to anyone.

It was an amazing experience! Tony and Pat are a lovely couple, very supportive and curious about my country.
The house is beautiful and cozy, and the all the meals were delicious!
It's a nice place to have contact with nature, learn about growing your own food and sustainability. The working hours are well respected, and even their cat Maisy joined me :)
They were really sweet in inviting me to their activities with other friends, movie nights, take me to the station for me to visit other places, or even taking me with them in case they have something to do somewhere else :)

Tony was great the food he cooked was amazing and all locally sourced. The tasks we helped him do were very easy and enjoyable, while doing these I learnt a lot about sustainable living and environmental practices.

We had a great time staying with Tony. Right from the start he made us feel very welcomed and at home. He is an amazing cook and was happy to show us around the area and give recommendations of things to do on our time off. The tasks were all very well explained and therefore were pretty straight forward and easy to complete. We learn't alot off Tony about sustainability and eco living!
