English for Tibetans

Because this is not just a teaching experience — it’s a cultural exchange like no other. 🌏

You’ll have the chance to teach English to young Tibetan students, help create educational videos, and experience life in the Tibetan highlands surrounded by monasteries, festivals, horse races, and incredible mountain views 🏔️.

It’s a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in Tibetan culture, meet nomadic families, and make a real difference by helping students connect with the world through language and communication ❤️

I’m a Tibetan nomad who loves learning languages and sharing our traditions with people from around the world 🌿

You’ll be welcomed like family — with warmth, kindness, and respect. Volunteers can expect an open, flexible, and inspiring environment where creativity and curiosity are encouraged 🌞

We’ll work together, share meals, visit local places, and enjoy the beauty of Litang’s mountains and culture. You’ll always be supported, appreciated, and treated as a valued part of our community 💛

Rinchen did his best to give me a great experience in Litang. He'll show you the best spots in and around town and teach you about Tibetan culture and Buddhism. The bathroom is temporarily out of order, so you'll walk a bit for a proper toilet or shower and get some sightseeing in, since he doesn't have a car right now. Meals are simple but full of calories, which you'll need! You'll have plenty of free time to explore and talk with the curious, warm locals. I was a bit unsure about the work to be done, so we made guidelines for future volunteers. Take it slow and enjoy the \"City in the Sky\".

I enjoyed my time with Rinchen, learning a lot about Tibetan culture and immersing in their way of living. Rinchen was lovely and did his best to accommodate me. The experience was definitely a challenging one though due to the acclimatising process, having to walk a bit to use a proper toilet and also having to walk everywhere as he no longer owns a car. However hopefully soon Rinchen will have the toilet working and he is already looking into getting a new car which will make the experience run a lot more smoothly for future volunteers. So if you are up for a challenge I highly recommend!

Rinchen and his family were so kind and hospitable and truly made me feel like part of the family, thank you 🫶. It was a great experience to learn about Tibetan and Buddhist culture, and there are many opportunities to interact and stay with locals. I will say that the facilities are basic (no running water, shower or toilet) and at times I was not always sure about what work I was supposed to be doing; however, overall this was a warming and unique experience to immerse myself in a beautiful culture and landscape!

Rinchen and his family treated me as one of their own and an esteemed guest at the same time! I had the absolute best time being included in family meals, visiting amazing monasteries, connecting with locals during festivals, living in his cozy home and in a yak fur tent with his nomadic family, herding yaks, playing with kids, experiencing the gorgeous landscape ... there was not much English teaching to be done during my visit but I will continue to work with Rinchen on this project for future volunteers. Bring money because they're so hospitable and you'll want to buy them things!

Jess really did it. It is a huge undertaking to come from Canada to China and then on to the Tibetan Plateau.

She worked out social media, Internet, communication, and digital problems we were having which is an enormous help.

We appreciate her willingness, enthusiasm and ability to fit right in.

She will be helping in the future online and that will be another significant effort.

Many thanks and we want you back whenever you are able.

Worth the challenge. Litang moves at a much slower pace. One moment it's raining, the next you're under 9+ UVI. Rinchen is a solid guy who works hard to support 3 children and his mother. I was there for 3 week and spent around $600 USD. Realistically, you could get by on $100 USD a week if you keep it simple. The locals are warm and welcoming. Very common for a local to invite you into their home for tea, bread, and yak. Litang is 4 kilometers above sea level, and the surrounding nomadic villages sit even higher. The direct bus from Chengdu from Litang is about 10 hours. 100% coming back.
