Hostal Gato Colonial
We are a small backpackers hostel in the heart of Santo Domingo's colonial quarter. The hostel has 18 rooms and a roof terrace with a view of the ruins of the San Francisco Monastery, the first in the Americas.
The owners/managers are two friends: Christian(Spain) and Juan Carlos (Spain). We have a rescue cat called Kiwi. We pride ourselves on supporting the community around us. We love recommending local businesses and working with our neighbours to keep the street clean and tidy.
Nearby we have the weekly Sunday "Bonye" concert - a free Merengue and Salsa concert set in the monastery ruins.
We are also a few minutes walk from all the bars, nightclubs and main sights of the Zona Colonial.
We pride ourselves on our flexibility and on helping our staff and the community around us.
We will lay out the expectations clearly (4 hours a day, 5 days a week) and provide you with some tasks we would like you to complete. We'd like to arrange a Zoom call with you before you come.
We speak Spanish and English.

My experience at the hostel was very good. I definitely love the location and the view it has of the Monastery. Everything is very close; you can walk to the tourist attractions and the supermarkets. The Colonial Zone is a zone where you can walk down the street until very late and have fun dancing bachata. Pablo and Juan Carlos are very attentive and always on top of everything.

Pablo and Juan Carlos were excellent hosts. The tasks are simple and flexible, and I had the opportunity to meet many friendly people. In addition, the hostel is super nice and perfect for working or studying with a laptop. It is in an ideal location for going out, exploring the city and having fun.

Juan Carlos and Pablo are incredible people, always kind and attentive. The volunteer schedules let you really enjoy the city, and the hostel is located in a safe area. The days off can be combined, which makes visiting the rest of the island much easier.
The tasks are simple; at first it may seem a little chaotic, but once you get the rhythm, everything becomes easy. I will miss this place a lot. I felt at home and had the opportunity to get to know the true Dominican culture ❤️

The hostel is a truly special place. It's home to a wonderful community of locals and travelers alike. Whether you wanna go dancing, find great places to eat, see the monuments, there's always people around do something. Work shifts go by quickly having great conversations and enjoying the vibes (e.g. bachata playing, random people saying hi when they walk by in the street, etc.). The hostel is perfectly located where you can walk to anywhere you need without needing a taxi or bus. I would recommend this place to anyone looking to have an authentic experience in Santo Domingo.

I would definitely do it again! The hostel became a home for me; I felt so welcomed. Pablo and Juan Carlos's treatment is wonderful; they are incredible people who will do everything possible to help you feel at home in this place.
